Just in order to be clear the suppression pool allows steam discharges from the reactor cools them down and reduces their pressure and thus a venting path to secondary containment. It was secondary containment that experienced damage from the hydrogen detonations in unit 1 and 3 earlier. What has happened at unit 2 is still murky and developing but presumably yet another hydrogen detonation."Just puttin on the foil" - Jeff Hanson

Your the expert Ogie, that was just my opinion. ( all due respect ) Comparing Bhopal to TMI, Chernobyl or what going on in Japan is apples and oranges. One is a chemical disaster and the other is a nuclear disaster.Originally posted by Ogie Oglethorpe View PostDoc at this point no lives have been lost likewise even in a worst case situation the core were to melt beyond containments ability to deal with it, the situation means an environmental nightmare for a local area. While tragic the people have been evacuated the response has been admirable and the overall condemnation of the industry unwarranted. Did the chemical industry get shutdown after Bhopal?

The clue to the nature of your mental disturbances are in your post as quoted above. I suggest you read your own post and reconsider the merits of counselling.Originally posted by KrazyHorse View PostDon't need a psychatrist, twit. For those of you who are interested in actual facts, there is basically no evidence of increased cancer rates at whole-body doses below 50 mSvt. Mild radiation sickness begins to appear at whole-body doses of 1000-2000 mSvt, and death is fairly inevitable above 8000 mSvt.
The possible doses to general population are well below 50 mSvt currently (many orders of magnitude below that). Unless something catastrophic happens, that will remain the case. Bleating about the ridiculously low levels of exposure which arise from the venting of radioactive steam is idiotic. On the other hand, levels in the immediate reactor facility spiked at a high enough level that if they remained there precautions would need to be taken to cycle personnel in and out on the timescale of hours, not days.12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

True it is an apples oranges comparison but one has had no fatalities a workforce second to none with respect to training and professionalism and has had a relatively clean environmental record the other has killed untold numbers has varying degrees of professionalism and numerous superfund sites and attending lawsuits claiming carcinogenic effects.Originally posted by Docfeelgood View PostYour the expert Ogie, that was just my opinion. Your point is nukes have the potential for untold damage. You have just witnessed a worst case way beyond design basis accident. The situation is such that the developments happen seemingly fast but are within the realm of emergency response to avoid loss of life. Compare and contrast that to failure of a cyanide plant or isocyanate plant or vinyl chloride or even chlorine gas. Failure at thosevsites often means sudden death without time for emergency response."Just puttin on the foil" - Jeff Hanson

As trained rad workers we are allotted up to 5 rem yearly. Many rad workers burn their entire dose allotment in a single outage (typically a 40 50 day refueling cycle)Originally posted by KrazyHorse View PostFor those of you who are interested in actual facts, there is basically no evidence of increased cancer rates at whole-body doses below 50 mSvt.
