    • if anything this incident proves that even having 3rd strongest measured earthquake ever in relative proximity of the nuclear plant + 10m tsunami did not create an all-out catastrophe in a 40yo nuclear power plant. New ones can only be better designed and we should be finally switching to nuclear power in the developed world.

The cost of relying on oil from some third world dictatorships is a lot higher than having to take care of nuclear plants and waste domestically

For the most part I agree with the sentiments raised above.

I really don't want to consider the impacts of a full on meltdown. But worst worst worst case we are talking a local impact. Given the public has been evacuated, and the core has been shutdown, and the core has had a period of cooling (to what extent is debatable) even if the core was released from the RPV and had enough heat to get through the core catching basin (i.e. primary containment) the impact would not be a airborne dispersal of nuclides that could cause the most poisoning effects.

All that being said the political implications of the accident will be felt. TMI damn near shutdown every nuke plant in the US and was one vote shy of doing so. The Kemeny commission report could have ended the US industry had but one more member advanced the idea that US nuclear power at its current state in 1979 was not worth saving.

Canadian oil extracted with power coming from natural gas plants.

                    Nuclear Power helps Ontario.

I'm sure that's not true, it must come from AECL.

                            • I'm opposed to helping Ontario or Quebec in any way. Let the bastards freeze in the dark.

                              • Guys, I think the other 'Japanese Earthquake' thread needs a breath of air.
Alternatively you could spam KH's thread.
