  • I wonder what would be there to make a second explosion?

    • HYDROGEN, dumbass. HYDROGEN. The explosion was virtually identical to the first. It is very simple. Heat splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. Heat goes away, hydrogen and oxygen recombine---BOOM! Mini hindenburg. Now shut up.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

                          • Are most reactors built near large bodies of water? I can see why that might be so.

Seems a rather inconvenient coincidence that a tumbler nearby can swamp the machinery needed to make them safe.

                            Did nobody see this coming?

                            • The second explosion? Yes, ever since the plant got hit by first the earthquake and then the tsunami they've had problems with the cooling system. Yesterday the Japanese government said they now have problems with multiple reactors and if they had to do venting in the second reactor then they could get another hydrogen explosion and that seems to be exactly what happened.

They probably did, just not this scale. By that I mean they probably disigned the Plant to withstand (lets say) a quake magnitude 8 and a tsunami of 8 meters. Then they were struck with mag 9 and a 10 meter wave.

As with all risk management it all boils down to probability. I've heard experts say this catastrophe is a once in a millenium event. Contingency planning (is that the right term?) was apparently lower.

Likewise here in Holland the coastal defense against flooding is also in the range of once a millenium. That means there are 'known' circumstances where they probably fail.
