  • April 1: Workers for the company experimentally spray adhesive synthetic resin over the ground at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Okumamachi, northeastern Japan. TEPCO expects the resin spraying to prevent dust exposed to radiation materials from spreading out of the premises. (AP/TEPCO)

    • Little Help

Now I am confused about which pit is leaking. Is the pit that holds the reactor or the one that holds the spent fuel?
Or is it just a pit that holds water?
They don't give enough information as to which it is.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said it had found a crack in the pit at its No.2 reactor in Fukushima. Leakage did not stop even after concrete was poured into the pit, and Tokyo Electric is now planning to use water-absorbent polymer to prevent contaminated water from leaking out into the sea.

There is no pit containing spent fuel. It is either on a concrete pad entombed in huge ISFSI casks or in the spent fuel pool on the upper decks of reactor building

        • A news broadcast mentioned a "maintenance pool", but I could have misheard.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

          • I believe they normally do have a giant pool which they put the spent fuel rods in. The water helps to cool the rods and since it is 20-30 feet deep the water helps to contain the radiation.

            • TY Ogie, Do they put concrete around the reactor?
The news is giving conflicting reports. One says it is a maintenance pool and another says it is the concrete around the reactor.
I find it hard to believe the story about the concrete around the reactor.

Primary containment is a concrete steel lined structure that encases/hold/supports the reactor vessel.

Note in the diagram the reactor vessel the concrete structure that holds it and forms the drywall is containment. The spent fuel pools are on the upper deck.

I sure hope that report is wrong about the crack in the concrete containment. That wall is very thick, I just find it hard to believe that it would have a crack in it as the one news reported. I think it was ABC, not sure.

                  • BBC reports the crack is under the reactor.
The crack under reactor 2 may be the source of recent radiation in coastal waters, Tepco officials said.
Makes me wonder if there is more than one crack.

There was an earlier indication of damage to the suppression pool/ torus.

That is to say that any pressure relief blowdowns from the reactor to the suppression pool/torus may have found a leak path. While serious not has bad as containment breach.
