Was it an interview, or a hearing?

At any rate, if I call the police and say you are stalking me with continual responses to my words, they will likely not even call you, let alone 'invite' you down to have a discussion about it. It would be ridiculous.

Why did the AHRC think they should 'interview' a publisher commenting on world events?

I'm thinking there is some middle ground between Ezra's shrieking and your dismissal of his concerns with how the HRCs work.

    • Even funnier is when Ann Coulter comes to Canada, he gets all upset that she doesn't get to exercise her right to "free speech" (because she was intimidated by protests).
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

The interview was the hearing. If there was even a plausibly valid complaint, the HRC is mandated to investigate. In this case it would involve interviewing the participants of the complaint at the hearing. It's then that they decide if it proceeds to a tribunal.

Well yeah, if you're not a right wing christian then you must be a communist/environmentalist/muslim. They have basically the same goals.

          • Think of the commission as the detectives of a case. They interview those involved. Those interviews do not constitute "prosecution", regardless of what Ezra says.

            • I'm thinking the HRC could have evaluated the merits of the complaint by reading the material in question, and then should not have bothered someone who buys ink by the drum with a spurious complaint.

Intent is part of what they look at, which you cannot gather by just reading text or looking at pictures. Judging by the YouTube interview, the interview itself would be about 20 minutes in length if Ezra didn't rant for the camera.

I just don't see why it's such a big deal. Or why he talks about this years on end, every year making the case sound more and more ridiculous.

                • I'm actually kind of thinking that HRCs should be forbidden from taking on any case based on expression.

If there is some illegality, it should be left to public prosecutors and higher standards.

I see it as a big deal to have government agencies with weak standards going around questioning people about expression.

If that's a big deal, I'd hate to think of how massive a deal healthcare issues are.

The problem with the HRC/HRT is obvious -- I'm not a fan of them either. But the noise about them does not correspond to their significance. In reality, very few times are they used in freedom-of-expression cases (I can only think of one offhand, the Red Deer pastor who kept writing letters to the paper fearmongering about the evil gays and their agenda). And when they are used, they never make it to tribunal. If they ever do make it to the tribunal, the "punishments" are ridiculously light and do not result in jail time or criminal records.

My problem with the HRC/HRT is it's government inefficiency that ultimately doesn't do anything. Ezra's attacking it all from the wrong angle as an histrionic fearmonger about how Canada is just like the USSR.

                      • The problem is the weak standards and the importance of expression.

They should not have jurisdiction, period.

Why do you think the standards are weak?

Enumerate the HRT "convictions" for us.

Or do you mean the standards to get interviews?

I've been interrogated by cops in harsher conditions than Ezra faced for lesser perceived offenses.

I still can't comprehend why people make these things out like they're waterboarding.

                          • You were called into a police station to answer charges that you are stalking Ben?

                            • No, I was pulled over and had my car pulled apart to search for drugs, leaving the contents of the car on the side of the trans-canada highway. Total 4 hour ordeal, 2 hours of which was me intricately packing all my stuff back in (I was moving, it was VERY full).

They thought I was a drug mule of some kind.

I would consider that far worse than going down to a station and talking to the police about Ben.
