Indeed, in Australia our major Tory (right) party is "The Liberal Party".
I think it had to do with Franklin Roosevelt (who originally criticized Herbert Hoover for the deficit and overspending and then did the New Deal when elected into office). Liberal, which was associated with the Democratic Party, changed as the Democratic Party changed.

    • How long has "liberal" been associated with the Democratic party?

      • Democratic Party was the classic liberal party in the 1800s. The Republicans came from the Whigs who came from the Federalists who were always interested in using governmental power to help business or effect social change.

Basically goes all the way back to Hamilton vs. Jefferson.

Yeah but the Whigs were an off-shoot of the anti-Jacksonian wing of the Democratic-Republicans. They were John Quincy Adams' supporters.

Nor do I think it's appropriate to call Jefferson's Democratic-Republicans 'Democrats'. Andrew Jackson started the Democratic Party.

          • Mostly because by the time of Whig formation, the Democratic-Republicans were the only major political party after the Federalists collapsed shortly after the death of Hamilton.

                  • It should be amusing to see if they last. They are providing the signal fee to most for the next few months before starting to charge for it. Will the freebie convince people to pay for this service? I have my doubts.

                          • We should start a pool predicting when the first complaint about Sun News is sent to the CRTC.

They launch at 4:30pm so I think 5:00pm would be a good guess.
