Should the US just man up and add a national sales tax like virtually ever other modern country?
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
Considering the median household income in Philadelphia is $30,746 and the official unemployment rate is 10.7%, I think it would be callous to institute a 13% sales tax on top of the existing income and city wage taxes without a thorough economic examination of its effects.
That average is minimum wage here

I demonstrate that Philly is a ****hole and you don't stand up to defend it - have you lost your courage ?
In case you think that my suggestions are just ramblings, then I can only say that it's real life here

Well, it could be that the US gov has a secret plan to bankrupt the Chinese by bankrupting US - that would be gutsy.

I'm sure that whatever % increase in taxes, our pols would just take it as a mandate to spend even more. Why with that much money imagine how many other places we could invade!

"Capitalism ho!"
Maybe your state shouldn't rape people with high taxes, then?
No. It's the city, not the state. State income tax is a flat 3.07%. State sales tax is 6%. City income (wage) tax is 3.928%. City sales tax is 2% (so 6+2 = 8% sales tax).
Democrats.
So if you make the median household income here, that's 15%* going to the federal government (at least it's low tax bracket), 4.2% to Social Security, 1.45% to Medicare, 3.07% to the State, 3.928% to the City. Then 8% on purchases.
I don't know... another 5% on top of that on purchases?
And we haven't mentioned property taxes, tolls, gas tax (which is already one of the highest in the country here in PA at 31.2 cents per gallon), etc. yet.
*I am aware that ~$8000 (or whatever it is for married) would be not taxable. I'm giving a simple example.

As of right now, I'd say no, the US should not add a national sales tax without cutting other taxes. I could be wrong and, like I said, a thorough analysis of the effects of the tax would be necessary, but it seems a bit much on top of the existing taxes.
Someone in the 25% tax bracket which I imagine most posters here would be in would be (assuming they lived and worked in Philly) paying over 35% to the federal, state, and local governments. To then charge 13% on purchases combined with the property tax, gas tax, and all the other ways in which the government collects revenue, you'd be easily looking at people in the 25% tax bracket paying close to half their income to the government.
I don't know. I seem to be the only one so far against this so convince me otherwise.

Yes but Sweden sucks elephant balls so it's an unfair comparison.
By which metric?
They seem to categorically beat you in all of the important ones (quality of life, life expectancy, success at hockey, etc).
