It would be problematic to determine how important 100m speed is relative to 1RM bench press, true. However, let's say you were to chart the performance at each event of athletes from every sport. You would still have a useful comparison by noting where the athletes stand on each event.

The best male figure skaters tend to get coerced into playing hockey instead once their skills are evident. Many NHL players started as figure skaters.

The basic framework of my hypothetical test would paint a good picture for the comparison of athletes across sports. How does it not? It makes so much intuitive sense. Have everyone run basically a physical fitness test and see how they do. How is that not legitimate?

I just mentioned football drills because they're the only test specifically designed to measure agility and change of direction that I can think of.

If there are others then use them. The basic premises of a cone or tire drill should be an adequate gauge for agility that does not require any special skills, unlike putting people on ice.

The fact that football requires no special skills is another reason they're not very good athletes.
