That's Darryl Boyce last week. Tore his nose, got some severe cuts up by his eyes...but he didn't miss a game.

So Arena football must be really bad ass then? Oh wait...

No. they're not allowed to check into those boards in Arena football like in hockey so that's not really a good comparison.

What the hell is 'athletics'? Track and field?

And I am positive that professional American football players are physically superior to the athletes in every other sport. I really don't see any soccer player doing better on a composite of physical fitness measures than an NFL runningback, wide receiver, tight end, cornerback, safety, or linebacker.

I'm just thinking of Vernon Davis... he's 6'3" 254lbs, runs a 4.38 second 40-yard dash, has a 42 inch vertical, 10ft 8 inch standing broad jump, and did 33 reps on the 225lb bench. That is mind-boggling that someone his size could have such speed, strength, and power.

The only area where soccer players may have an advantage is in running endurance since a 254lb man can never compete in a pure endurance event with someone almost half his size. Nevertheless, running endurance is just one of many different ways to determine the athletic ability of an athlete; the football player kills in a broad composite measure, I am sure.

Because clearly, the more 'athletic' the players, the better the sport

Well yes. I have a feeling you're saying that sarcastically but I'm lost as to why you think it isn't true.

Would you prefer worse athletes? Slower and weaker people?

Huh? How many sports are purely running? Only track is pure running. Everything else involves a wider range of physical skills.

In that case, yes, clearly, athletes who can bench press more, given a certain level of fitness in other areas, are better athletes. If you have two athletes with identical measures in every conceivable way but one can bench more, yes, that one with the better bench would be a better athlete.

                              Are you somehow denying that?

And N35t0r, check it, about sprinter Ben Johnson:

Answers is the place to go to get the answers you need and to ask the questions you want

he was a 175-pound marvel who could bench press 335 pounds.
If you have any experience with high level sprinters, at least at the Division I level (I know several), then you know that upper body development is an important facet of their training. I'm not sure of the relationship and if you can ever categorically say that a stronger upper body represented by a bench press makes someone run faster, but upper body training is incorporated in all track and field training at the Division I collegiate level and there is a body of evidence that demonstrates that full-body strength development increases localized strength more effectively than specific localized training.
