Oh and your data about VO2 Max for football is misleading because it doesn't mention which positions were tested. Same with 'running' which doesn't account for any difference between sprinters and distance runners. WR's would have a different VO2 Max than O-linemen, obviously.
Take Bob Hayes who won the gold medal in the 100m at the 1964 Olympics as well as the gold in the 4x100m relay. I could be disingenuous like you and claim that Hayes would have a VO2 Max of 60-85 which is given for a track and field runner. He probably did have a VO2 Max at the upper bound of that. He was also a Hall of Fame NFL Wide Receiver. So, here comes Asher-levels of disingenuousness, NFL WR's have Olympic track runner VO2 max levels of 85, way beyond hockey players."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi
"I have nothing against Wilson, but he's nowhere near the same calibre of QB as Flutie. Flutie threw for 5k+ yards in the CFL." -Ben Kenobi

So what? The hockey numbers also contain stats for goalies, which probably shouldn't score that high.Originally posted by Al B. Sure! If football requires strength in more areas than hockey then it's a more generalized sport, isn't it? You might as well be telling us that football players are better than marathon runners.Originally posted by Al B. Sure! View PostMy contention would be that the football players possess many of the strengths required of hockey players while also having strengths that hockey players lack (the combine numbers point to some of those). Sure the hockey players will have unique strengths that the football players lack but it is my belief that the football players will come up on the plus side of this comparison.

KID
That is one of the most ignorant comments I've ever heard. But I'm not surprised based on the source.
Most of those that grow up in the great north could give a rat's ass about Football. To them, Hockey is the end all. It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

See this article?

It says how football is the most physically demanding sport. Who says it? Some guy named Jeff Little who blogs at bleacherreport.com. Says he played all the sports at some unknown level. Am I taking his word for it? No. Neither am I taking your word.

The fact of the matter is, no one here takes any issue with saying golfers are worse athletes (however you want to measure that) than a football RB. I don't think anyone would put up too much of a fight against the argument that baseball players are worse athletes than a football RB.
So why all of a sudden a comparison between hockey and football is impossible? Why all of a sudden, there are insurmountable trade-offs and wildly different and mutually exclusive strengths in each sport?"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

That depends on the facts as well. Look at how many college QBs picked a deal with baseball teams over being drafted (or even playing college football at all). They flame out of baseball and then try their hand at football (ie, Chris Weinke).Originally posted by Al B. Sure! We'd play most sports for a couple months a year but hockey was always the main winter sport.

You are a dumbass.Originally posted by gribbler View PostWhy would I consider a football player to be better than a golfer or a baseball player?
For people who are actually honest and have a brain... what's the deal? You're willing to rank the players between certain sports but not others? Okay, maybe baseball vs. football is a little debatable but golf vs. football is about as clear-cut as you can get. And why is it clear-cut? Because you can picture a golfer running and doing other activities and being left in the dust by the football player. The golfer never trains any of that to anywhere near the level that a football player does so he's obviously weaker across virtually all athletic domains. Even in areas where the football player doesn't have specific training, you expect enough carryover that he will still excel over the golfer.
Now take that a step forward away from intuition and test it out with actual athletes and why the hell can you not make a similar appraisal between baseball and football or football and hockey?"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi
