How can anyone possibly be this stupid? The idea is that I'm trying to figure out how is it that Dexter McCluster can have both a stronger upper and lower body (as measured by the bench press, vertical, and broad jumps) than his NHL contemporaries while also being smaller. Like I said, if he has a stronger upper body while being lighter and smaller than NHL players, that just means McCluster is that much more efficient.
YOU ARE LOOKING AT VERY SPECIFIC TESTS THAT REFLECT THE SPECIFIC TRAINING NFL PLAYERS PUT IN.
There's FAR more to "leg strength" than just jumping. It should SHOCK NO ONE that hockey players don't excel at JUMPING, considering THEY SKATE and THEY DO NOT TRAIN FOR JUMPING."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

What?!?!?! Next you'll be saying that training really hard for marathon doesn't make you a great sprinter.
If you exercise one bit of the body it becomes strong for all thigns that bit of the boday does. DURJon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth

Let me just say this.
I lettered in wrestling, football, baseball and hockey in high school. (played on the varsity teams)
I have played golf, racquetball, volleyball and cycled since then.
And HOCKEY was the most demanding and hardest of all. Period. And indeed there will be time To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?". t s eliot

Yup and I love how you ignored MikeH's comment to your inanity. There is carry over between activities. How do you become a better sprinter? You don't just ****ing run. You do box jumps and you squat. Squat heavy.
You are a joke, Asher. The NHL combine measures jumping ability both vertically and broad. If they didn't think jumping is an adequate gauge for lower body muscle strength and power, they would not test it.
I note how they not only measure the vertical and the broad they also measure a best of 4 jumps.
I note how you claim that upper body strength is not important but the NHL tests not only the bench press, they do a max pushups test, and they measure both push and pull strength by some means that's not clear by the website.
BY THE WAY CHECK IT YALL! WHAT'S THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF PUSHUPS FOR NHL PROSPECTS? 26.1!
Hit the deck, yall and see how many you can do. I bet half this forum can do more than 26.

If he's being sarcastic then he's ****ing wrong. His example of marathon vs. sprinter is a little extreme since they're a bit on two different sides of the running spectrum and the muscle mass that allows a sprinter to excel would be to a marathoners detriment.Originally posted by N35t0r View PostSo, alby, what do you think? Nevertheless, the short distance times of top marathoners are very impressive. When Haile Gebrselassie ran the Berlin Marathon in 2:03:59, he averaged 17 seconds per 100m over 26+ miles. You are smoking crack if you don't think he could do a single 100m in 10 seconds or less.
However, the marathoner doesn't have explosive leg strength like a sprinter does. That's a difference borne from their sports. The sprinter has developed leg muscles built for power whereas the marathoner doesn't.
A better comparison would be would a sprinter do well on a high jump? Yes, he would. Why? Because the musculature and explosive power required of a sprinter makes him also good at jumping and at squatting heavy.
If pushing off on the ice is how it looks, the primary movers should be the same as those involved with sprinting and jumping. Apparently the NHL seems to think so since they measure jumping.Last edited by Al B. Sure!; February 8, 2011, 13:37."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

No. My point is how woefully weak they are in strength. 26 pushups and 10 bench reps at 150lbs are jokes for the average upper body strength levels for NHL athletes.Originally posted by N35t0r View PostWe're clearly better athletes then
So it follows we'd be better at hockey than NHL players
Pity there's few ice rinks here
If you can best those numbers and work on your hockey skills as well taking them up to the professional level, then yeah, you would be better at hockey. It's a matter of getting everything else right."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi
