They wouldn't have needed sworn statements. Sworn statements can always be viewed as skeptical. And while I was convinced quite early that this wasn't an issue, I can see why some viewed it with suspicion. DA GOVERNMENT TOLD ME SO doesn't always cut it. And if they're producing hospital records and newspaper announcement, why the heck didn't they just produce this?

The sworn statement was from the Hawaii governor was because, by law, they could not bring out the "long form" document. (Why that's the law, I have no clue.)

My sense is that the Obama camp had no idea this would take on such a life of its own. And by the time it did, he was in office, so why waste time dealing with the nutters?

I'm still a bit unclear as to the timing of this. Maybe he was tired of taking all the crap. Maybe just wanted to discredit Trump.

The attitude you espouse above smacks of: "You'd only be worried about (insert invasive entity here) if you have something to hide." There is something to be said for standing up to ignorant bullies by not given in to their insane demands; I'm actually rather said the Admin caved on this.

1. If you were willing to believe that the Birth Certificate produced by Obama in 2008 that bears an official State of Hawaii seal is somehow a forgery (despite the attestations of Hawaii state officials), why would you then be willing to believe these documents, produced from anonymous online sources, are genuine? At least be consistent in applying your "skepticism."

One thing I've noticed is that a very very good way of telling that one idea is complete and utter bull**** is having there be a whole bunch of conflicting ideas about why it's true that are based on completely different logic. There a stupidly large number of theories floating around right now that purport to explain why Obama isn't eligible (bizarre definitions of "natural born citizen" that make anyone with a parent who's a foreigner not a natural born citizen, to theories about Obama renouncing his citizenship as a child (which you can't do) to his birth certificate being fake to a dozen others). Whenever you get this kind of theorizing you know that people don't believe these things because of the evidence, they're just grasping at straws to justify what they think anyway.

That's an even more damning article than the politico piece. Nice! And from Slate no less. I would say the entirety of that article indicates birterism in all it's phases ( not merely the origin) was calculated polical rationales not racism.

I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying. The architects of Birtherism may not have had racist motivation, but its propagation amongst the fringe nutters and into more mainstream thought was due to subconscious racism.

It's the same thing as creationism. I don't think for a second that Gingrich or other GOP leading lights are truly creationists; but they ring that bell to gain support.
