Cynical politicians would have never expected to get very far with birtherism if not for widespread racism so saying that politicians are the root cause of birtherism is kind of silly.

One day I was having lunch with about 10 co-workers.
One of them talked about 9/11 being an inside job, etc. etc.
So I was debunking it with the usual stuff. Then everybody got a bit involved in our discussion, so I asked: "Who else believes this crap at least a bit?" and 6 out of 10 raised their hands!
6 out of 10! well educated, well payed, sane people believed this!
I was shocked!
Not even paranoid americans, but sane dutch people.
Later I learned that the more people feel like they are not in charge of their own life, the easier they'll accept any kind of conspiracy. It's easier to accept that your life is not what you want it to be b/c some puppet player pulls your strings, then b/c you just failed yourself.

Even with all we knew about how organized the mafia was during prohibition, people still laugh at the idea of organized crime conspiracies taking place in politics. Usually the excuse people wll give you is something along the lines of, "I just don't think people are that organized..." Funny how easy it must be to get away with stuff these days, no one believes its possible....

Just because birthers are not screaming "Hang the ******!" from the rooftops, does not mean that we can discount any racist element in the birther movement as something minor.
