That's not an answer to the question. Why should the US care about the level of democracy in other countries where our interests are already being served and there are costs to upsetting the apple cart? This is especially true in countries where the only really choice of opposition is the Army or the Muslim Brotherhood.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

The answer is why people want to fly passenger planes (sorry, apple carts!) full of people into your buildings and generally burn your flag.

It isn't unquestioning. Increasingly in recent years western govts including Washington have been critical.

            • Do me a favour! The US has just rolled over and took it up the arse from Israel over the freezing of homes being built in the settlements...

They might ask 'questions', but then they do **** all about it! The Republican c*nts in the White House want to slash the US deficits - I can think of billions of $$$ that the US could save overnight by cutting all that lovely US taxpayers money they just give away to Israel without any strings whatsoever!

QFT. MOBIUS seems insistent on failing to realize that the opposition in Egypt would basically turn the country into the next Iran or Lebanon--a state sponsor of terrorism or a state run by terrorism. As it stands we have a solid ally in the Middle East who is remarkably more liberalized than his radical Muslim opposition.

                • Cold war mentality. Oppressive dictatorships are good if they're on our side! Those goat-****ers are simply unfit for self-government.

                  • As I mentioned in the other thread, since there will be dictatorship in Egypt whether Mubarak is head honcho or not, we may as well stick with the dictator who is pro-West and doesn't actively seek Israel's destruction or fund terrorism.

Complain all you want about the fact that democracy is unworkable in the vast majority of the Middle East. It's just a fact.

                    • And how do you know dictatorship is inevitable? Sounds like a self-fulfilling prophecy to me. Your bigotry is showing.

                      • If that is the position the US wants to take don't you think they should STFU about human rights and spreading democracy?

At least you and George W. Bush can agree about something.

No, not if spreading democracy would actually help. I think Bush was wrong to try to spread democracy to Iraq and Palestine--I don't think it's gotten any better. Afghanistan's not totally clear yet I think. But democracy isn't workable everywhere, and it's a tool to be used in the right places. A population with a culture compatible with democracy will be greatly served by it. A different culture will not. I'm not naive enough to think that it works everywhere--the evidence is that this is clearly untrue.
