Provide an example of where you think democracy is workable.
The United States. Canada. The UK. India. Australia. Germany. France. Israel. Switzerland. Denmark. Finland. Norway. Sweden. Japan. South Korea. Singapore. Taiwan. South Africa...
I can go on.

So if you aren't a democracy you can't be a democracy?
Need I remind you the US wasn't a democracy...until it was.

I'm sure many Brits thought you weren't able to govern yourselves.
Many still do.

Well he listed Singapore, probably because of his belief that rich people are superior
Yeah, I wasn't going to quibble with the borderline examples. His point was clear.

It took a while for the US to get something resembling democracy, but I guess HC would have dismissed the idea back then. After all black people can't take care of themselves, right?

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio
This Clash of Civilizations nonsense that HC is spouting is just plain wrong.
Turkey and Lebanon are Middle Eastern democracies
If they can do it (and even with constant Israeli and Syrian meddling in Lebanon), there's no reason to think Islam is somehow incompatible with democracy.
Hell, the Palestinian Authority is pretty democratic as well. They vote, have a president, a parliament, etc.

Lebanon is not a democracy. Don't kid yourself. Turkey's a special case, and I conceded there are places in the middle east where democracy does work. But the number is minute compared to the times a horrible dictator has been replaced by an even worse one following an election.

This Egyptians can't govern themselves undercurrent is pretty sickening. And preventing democratic rule is just going to be horrible for the US's short and long term reputation in the region.

Right, because supporting democracy in Gaza was a great idea. Imran, give me an example where the US propping up democracy has helped. I seem to recall the liberal folks being the ones criticizing Bush for "spreading democracy" to Iraq and Afghanistan.

I want to know why Lebanon isn't a democracy. And how much of it not being a democracy is because of anything internal or because of meddling by Syria and Israel.
I also want to explore what other cultures are incompatible with democracy. Spain, Portugal, Brazil, and all of Latin America have had long histories of dictatorships, coups, revolutions, and very little democracy. Is the Iberian culture, like the Arab culture, also anti-democracy?
What about Slavic?
Why is South Korea on your list of democracies? Why is Korean culture favorable to democracy in South Korea but not in North Korea?
Why is Japan favorable to democracy? You go back before 1945 and you'd be hard-pressed to see those guys developing a successful democratic process in the near-future.

And, of course, the US's propping up of dictators sure worked well in Iran, Iraq, and Pakistan.
