The record low in Dallas for today was 11F set in 1963. Philly's record low was 1F set in 1981.

I am positive that if we listed all the lows for today in Dallas from the last century and placed them side by side with the lows in Philly that there will be far more below freezing days on the Philly side.

Okay it took a while but I got the historical data for yesterday since it's a complete day (January 11). I had to find this manually so I'm only doing the past 11 years. Noting the highs and lows for each day as well as the average wind speed on that day. All temps are in F.

2011: 33/21/14mph
2010: 55/27/4mph
2009: 60/28/4mph
2008: 66/36/5mph
2007: 66/51/18mph
2006: 69/37/11mph
2005: 73/63/13mph
2004: 64/36/10mph
2003: 45/36/7mph
2002: 59/39/9mph
2001: 45/37/4mph

Only 3 times in the past 11 years did the low ever dip below freezing, although two of those years, the high was as high as 55F and 60F. Winds have also been minimal. Interestingly, those 3 colder points were in the past 3 years, for whatever reason.

Hey moron, read what I said. I noted the unusually recent cold weather in the South and was speaking generally. Atlanta's average high for today is 51F and its average low is 33F, both above freezing.

2011: 34/28/6mph
2010: 42/18/8mph
2009: 60/32/10mph
2008: 57/43/9mph
2007: 53/30/4mph
2006: 63/46/6mph
2005: 66/44/3mph
2004: 46/21/2mph
2003: 39/27/12mph
2002: 57/39/9mph

5/10 years, the lows did dip below 32F BUT highs never got that low and on some below freezing low days, the high was as warm as 53F.

There is no reason to believe that January 11th has happened to be an especially warm day in either ATL or Dallas the past decade. Rather, early to mid January is probably the coldest time period in either city so January 11th could be expected to have some of the lowest recorded temperatures of the year.
