  • Good god Asher...apples to oranges. You really are expressing startling stupidity. Then when you are called on it, you start accusing people of racism. Just **** off if you can't honestly debate.

    • I mean, Washington DC already has one of the most restrictive gun control regimens in the US and has the one of the highest murder rates in the nation too.

I just believe that as a nation we should actually enforce the laws already on the books and not add more that are pretty much just placebos to make soccer moms and dads feel 'safer' driving around in their SUV's.
I have more issues than Marvel Comics and more problems than a math text book.

        HUNDREDS OF THEM!!!!

Now look at the numbers in the US.
About $240 for a shotgun, $1,000 for a pistol (with silencer), $2,400 for something well made.

That tells me everything I need to know.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Why is there so much hatred toward soccer moms? I don't get it. Is it because they're mothers or because their kids play sports...?

You are right. I should have used a better phrase.

              Uh. Why?

Every single time this discussion comes up and country comparisons ensue, it always comes down to what they politely call "socioeconomic status". Then it goes to "demographics". Then we're talking about the "inner city". We all know what they mean. Let's not be naive, HC.

And it's not apples to oranges. How the **** is % of homicides using firearms apples to oranges?

Those figures are not even CLOSE. And you can't blame those on socioeconomic status, population density, etc. The simple ****ing answer is access to firearms. Access to firearms in the US with lax gun control is trivial. Access to firearms in the UK with strict gun control is hard. Lo and behold, the percentage of murders with firearms in the US is many times higher.

Only a complete and utter moron would think gun control has no effect on that.

A stupidly inane comparison unless people are searched at the border of DC and its neighbouring states and guns confiscated.

                • It's apples and oranges because no one has constructed two identical countries, and then given one of them guns and taken guns away from the other. I guess there is no point in making international comparisons. Why is Norway a pretty good place to live while Afghanistan is pretty terrible? I guess we'll never arrive at any insights on that question, because apples and oranges, dude.

This is false. The reasons Afghanistan is a terrible place to live are apparent, whereas trying to find a causal relationship between guns and crime is completely subtler than observations like life expectancy, warfare, freedom, etc.

Crime is more complicated than issues like health and conflict and political freedom...? What exactly are you basing this statement on? And are you saying the crime stats are somehow uniquely "apples and oranges" comparisons?

                      • Apparently, there is a magical variable in the US that makes gun murder soar, independently of gun control. We keep hearing about it from all around the Internet. I have yet to hear a convincing account of it, but you gotta commend people for their faith.

                          US: 65%
                          Canada: 34%

                          Braindead's lessons in Interpreting Statistics:

Lesson 1. This proves Yanks murder one another more efficiently than Canucks, who are more efficient murderers than Poms. Shooting is more efficient than beating somebody to death with a seal club, which in turn is more efficient than whatever methods Poms use to murder one another. This demonstrates the natural brutality of Canuck's and the cold bloodedness of Yanks. Poms are just useless.

Lesson 2. Statistics must always be used selectively, which is why I deleted some of them in my quote.

Err. Actually, it's pretty ****ing apparent that the reason the UK only has 7% of its homicides firearm-related while the US is 65% is because it's way ****ing easier to get guns in the US.

If that's not apparent to you, go find the nearest bridge and jump off of it. Or better yet, go to your friendly neighbourhood Walmart, buy a gun, and shoot yourself.

HC, please don't kill yourself jumping off a bridge. We don't want Asher starting threads arguing that the USA needs better bridge control laws.

                              • Here's another victory for the widespread availability of guns.

Six people are dead and three in critical condition after a shooting Wednesday at a hair salon in Seal Beach, California.

Toll rises to 8 dead in California salon shooting

Los Angeles (CNN) -- The death toll in Wednesday afternoon's mass shooting at a Southern California beauty salon rose to eight as Seal Beach police reported two of three critically injured survivors died.

A ninth person remained in critical condition, Sgt. Steve Bowles said late Wednesday afternoon.

Six people were found dead inside the Salon Meritage after police responded to a call about shots being fired inside the business shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, police said. Three more were found critically injured, Bowles said.

A suspect, described as a white male, is in custody, he added.
Cops: Several dead in salon shooting

"He was cooperative. He did not provide any resistance to the officers and he was taken into custody," Bowles said.

In addition to the people who were killed and injured, he said, "there were people in the salon who were not shot."

Authorities are investigating what relationship the gunman had with anyone inside the Salon Meritage.

"We don't know if he's related or what his involvement is with the salon," Bowles said.

"It appears that the salon was busy at the time, and it appears as if almost every hair station was occupied," he added.

The people shot appeared to be seeking shelter or cover during the shooting, Bowles said. Victims were scattered throughout the salon, and one of the injured was a man who was found outside the salon -- the only victim found outdoors -- Bowles said.
