this should not happen, as there was a long and bloody war there before, and the two sides are pretty well matched so it is fairly certain (at least for African conditions), that there will be no war.

South has no intentions to invade north, AFAIK, just to be set free, while North is to weak after decades of war with the South and than subesquently Darfur to engage in a direct war, esp with another country, which South Sudan will likely become, and further risk international intervention.

Self-determination at least there is hope for a better future, definitely a good step for that part of the world.

I'm not convinced. It's like when the Spice Girls split. The Spice Girls were sh*t, but then we had to deal with each of the individual members going on to make more sh*t at an increased volume. At least they fell flat on their ugly faces.

Until they go to war with one another

I wish the Spice Girls would've gone to war with one another. With lots of firepower.

I think that Spice Girls would rather make love than war... what's wrong with that?

Why get involved at all then?

That's what I was trying to get at. Apparently it's "Yay, international community" as long as nothing goes wrong. Otherwise, "not our problem".

OFITG - I sincerely hope you are right. It is the oil that worries me as already the reported clashes appear to be in the heavily contested area.
