    Why would it matter?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Without outside intervention it will be a very long and very bloody process.

That's a good point. I think China should be responsible for this one.

Also, let's list the number of countries successfully split over the last few hundred years:

        North and South Dakota
        North and South Carolina
        North and South Haberbrook

Canadians would say let Portugal do it.

And your point is? It's not as if peace breaks out and all live happily ever after just because of a split.

I am. Several hundred if need be (and remember I come from a tiny country of 2 million).

Though the most cost effective way to achieve independence would be just to fund, train and arm the South in case of a war of independence while giving the new state international recognition. Even the American colonies needed outside help to get their freedom.

Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

I think if the international community sponsors and brings about a process that could lead to war the international community should bear some responsibility for the outcome. If it's "not our concern" we shouldn't be there in the first place.

They just got out of the longest civil war in modern times. At a minimum, I don't think the path they are on is any worse than where they came from.

I wouldn't mind, it would get those people with the "help darfur" shirts to be forced to find something else to whine about.

Sure I'm for it as long as Obama's America foots the bill, sends the troops and the contractors and everything else that this brand new failed state might need. That's all fine, but so far I think the discussion has avoided the most important question of how this new country should be named.

In other words: DEAR GOD, WHAT WILL IT BE CALLED??

I support South Sudan because non muslims shouldn't be forced to be ruled by muslims, like Yanks and the Saudi agent Obama
