However by the same logic, would you agree that monopolies like Bell or Microsoft shouldn't have FTC restrictions? After all, nothing is stopping other companies from producing competing products at lower prices.*
Bell, if you're talking about the oldschool phone lines, did have a barrier of entry. It's obviously not feasible for other companies to wire up all of those homes.

Uh, Al, in that example the union is actually doing something which appears to be in the interests of its actual workers (aside from negative PR).
I screwed up and cut off the start of it. Read the beginning. And no, it's not about doing something in the interests of the workers that is a problem... it's how it affects everyone else, the city, the economy, and the sheer absurdity of pipes to no where!

This is what I mean about lifting a hammer in Philly:
For instance, due to labyrinthine union work rules, multi-step tasks must be done in a certain order; masonry workers might stand around waiting for carpenters to build a new form to hold their cement, while the carpenters wait for laborers to demolish the old form, and they in turn wait for the electricians to shut off power. Meanwhile, everyone is paid.

I agree. I think that if there are barriers to entry then monopolies should be broken up.

I needed a laugh, and this thread certainly gave me a couple
Edit: Dang, forgot to give a to Elok for his good findings on pictures.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

There are very few examples of natural monopolies. Certain wired telecoms used to be one possible example, though their relevance is fading.
There is no one lazier than a union member with seniority.
Bull****. I am.

Microsoft in OS and Google in Online Advertising and Valve in online game distribution could all be considered natural monopolies in some fashion.
