Thoth, I've worked as management in a union workplace. The (unskilled) unions ****ing suck. They're corrupt, leadership is very self-serving, they prevent the termination of union employees who exhibited gross violations of company policy (such as an employee drinking on his break and being so drunk he collapsed into a drunken slumber on the job on MULTIPLE occasions) while simultaneously harassing non-union eligible employees (how the hell does a union prevent certain demographic groups from being admitted into the union?!), they use violent bullying tactics (bringing in large-bodied men to harass my female boss), etc.
Unions are beyond terrible.
However, the very same company edited time punches, forced employees to work over 40 hours without overtime nor even straight pay, did not report safety violations and injuries, ignored health department guidelines, etc.
Needless to say, the union never, as far as I know, took issue with ANY of that.
