Thoth, I've worked as management in a union workplace. The (unskilled) unions ****ing suck. They're corrupt, leadership is very self-serving, they prevent the termination of union employees who exhibited gross violations of company policy (such as an employee drinking on his break and being so drunk he collapsed into a drunken slumber on the job on MULTIPLE occasions) while simultaneously harassing non-union eligible employees (how the hell does a union prevent certain demographic groups from being admitted into the union?!), they use violent bullying tactics (bringing in large-bodied men to harass my female boss), etc.

    Unions are beyond terrible.

However, the very same company edited time punches, forced employees to work over 40 hours without overtime nor even straight pay, did not report safety violations and injuries, ignored health department guidelines, etc.

Needless to say, the union never, as far as I know, took issue with ANY of that.

There is no one lazier than a union member with seniority.

Anyone who thinks unions are a good idea clearly does not understand what they actually do.

Sounds like you got stuck with a very ****ty union. Unions are supposed to represent the workers who make up their membership.

If your local allowed Management to get away with egrarious violations like you have cited, it isn't a real union.

If you think unions are terrible, then you have never worked in a non-union shop.

Idiot. Unions help protect workers from being exploited by douchbag morons like yourself.

"right to work" You mean "right to be exploited"

I have worked in a non-union shop, you idiot. I was very grateful to as well. Barely above minimum wage at a grocery store, and at BEST a union would have deducted fees to perpetuate their monopoly. At worst, it might have negotiated higher benefits for employees, jeopardizing my ability to get a job entirely.

HC doesn't understand that unions exist to help protect the rights of the working class.

In the unlikely event that he ever actually gets a real job, that might change, but don't hold your breath.

No, Thoth. I was management. Management above me was absurd with the violations and ordered me to perpetuate them.

Still, if you're stuck between a ****ty union and a ****ty employer, I think it would make more sense to favor the people that pay you rather than the people who deduct union dues.

What the **** does "protecting" the working class even mean? Why'd you get that job if it is so terrible? Are your abilities that worthless? The amount you get paid is the amount your labor is worth, and if you think you deserve better pay than the market assigns to you, then you fundamentally believe that your value judgement is superior to that of other people. I believe it was KrazyHorse that described this as "brain damage".

Hmm. I, too, would like to defend a ludicrously oversimplified stance on a complex issue I know little of. But I can't decide which faction to play as. Perhaps a comparison of communist and free-market cheesecake pictures is in order? It certainly couldn't hurt the thread.

Horse****. You would have had a higher wage, better benifits and some protection when some douchemoron management wanker decided to cut costs.

If you had ever worked a real job in the real world you might understand.

Well, that's a start, but it's the only relevant result for "Communist Cheesecake" I found on Google Images. Lots of pictures of actual cheesecake, along with a few furries. Yuk. Does anybody with better Google-fu care to contribute?
