I used to consider myself agnostic pretty much right until I started on Poly.

None of the world's religions offer any acceptable explaination of any great being or creator. In fact IMO, to anyone capable of free thought, a religious text such as the bible, should actually encourage the reader to become an atheist!

Having to argue with people on Poly over the years has actually made me more and more atheist over the years - not out of spite, but that the more I learn about the world's mind boggling multitudes religions cults and beliefs - the more atheist it makes me!

There is still a kernel of the original agnostic in me though. I like the idea of the Gaia Theory for instance, but I wouldn't go assuming their was some great sentient being behind it all...

That's the Gaia Theory by James Lovelock, not Hippy Gaia...

Most atheists haven't read the Bible - FACT!

                      • I've read the bible.

Not all of it, to be fair.

                          • I guess that some actually have. It's kind of a red flag though when someone says something like, "the more I learn about the world's mind boggling multitudes religions cults and beliefs - the more atheist it makes me!" That person is actually quite ignorant. It takes a lot to understand why someone becomes a Christian. I have yet to find an atheist who actually knows. I believe Nietzche read the Bible. Indeed, he thought of himself as a Christian at one time. But I don't believe he really understood any of it.

                            • It doesn't take a lot to understand why someone becomes religious - indoctrination, fear, weakness and a lack of the fibre to face up to reality.

                                Patently untrue.

Christians tend to be very simple minded people. You're told not to question things, and you go "okies" after all. The psychology behind indoctrination, groupthink, etc. is pretty well understood at this point. You're not as complex as you want to think you are.
