Didn't realize you were part of the English-only crowd. And of course this entire statement ignores the melting pot ideal of American culture.

        In theory, yes.

In practice, the legal difficulties would make it almost impossible to have. Inheritance laws alone would be a *****.

No they don't because we have a Constitution and people who come here have rights. Thankfully.

the moment you move out of Iraq, Afghanistan - completely, stop spending billions to prop conformist regimes in ME, and stop unequivocally supporting Israel

scard ban comparing to all this, does not even make the hardliners notice the French.

If you generalize from 'France' to 'Europeans' you just reveal a typical anti-European prejudice. Esp. if you claim that this case shows the top level of human prejudice without comparing it to the other levels of people's prejudices worldwide (or 'first-worldwide').

yes, the English would rather be put in the same group with the Taliban rather than the French, Germans with Austrians, Norvegians with Icelanders, and Swedes with Polar Bears

Why aren't veils part of the melting pot? The melting pot isn't just about chinese food that isn't that spicy for the benefit of white people.

i'm quite conflicted about this. on the one hand, people should be allowed to wear what they want. it's a pretty basic freedom. on the other hand though, the argument about the veil being a means by which women are oppressed is a powerful one.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

Indeed. The solution, IMO, is not to ban it. First, I think that it's wrong to do so. Second, I think it gives the veil even more power. There are much better ways, I think, to work for women's lib than banning veils.

There are folks here in the USA of various religious demoninations that teach (or indoctrination, depending on your view) all sorts of stuff to their kids. I think lots of it is nuts and some of it borders on abuse. The use of government power to "fix" it, however, strikes me as a cure worse than the disease. Especially since the disease often seems to run its course in time.

I admittedly am not a fan of the French, but at the same time I can respect them for enforcing their own cultural values and beliefs. After all, the French have the right to be French, and not some extra-territorial region of Saudi Arabia.

If Muslims want to live in France, then they should abide by French laws, customs, culture and traditions, but if they feel that this is infringing on their “rights” to practice their faith, then by all means they can pack up their goods, and move to an Islamic state, where they can have all the veils and sharia law they want. As I see it, when the Saudis allow me to build a massive synagogue in Mecca, or to even start allowing non-Muslims to visit it, then maybe the French could show some lenience towards Muslims, but until that time, Vive la Liberté! Vive la France!
