    Never forget.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

He also hates Texans and Australians, he does diversify." ~ Braindead

Where were you and what were you doing?

I had gotten done with work at 0700 that morning (0800 Eastern) and drove to Madison Wisconsin instead of going home to visit one of my best friends. He was closing on his first house that afternoon and I was going to help him move some stuff after they got the house. I made it to his apartment a little before 0900 Eastern. I was listening to 670 AM WSCR The Score on the way there and the reports of the treagedy hadn't been broadcast on the station yet. My friend and I started to play a first-person shooter on his PlayStation. I think it was Duke Nuke'em or some such. I'm not sure what time it was, but my other best friend called me on my cell phone telling me that planes had hit both towers and the Pentagon. I told him to stop bull****ting me. He said he was serious and that I should turn on a TV. Bill and I switched the game off and on came the coverage. I said a stunned "Holy ****." I don't remember hanging up the phone, but I obviously did. The rest of the morning Bill, his wife and I all watched the TV (even though I had been up since 0700 the previous morning). I remember going to eat at Kentucky Fried Chicken at noon. Not only was it real slow for a lunch, but it was dead quiet. I also remember looking in the sky and not seeing an airplane. It was odd. The one good thing that came out of it was my wife, who I was just dating at the time, was working downtown Chicago at the new Goodman Theatre. I was scared for her being so close to the Sears Tower. I was scared so much for her that it made me realize that I loved her. So, in a way, 9/11 was a catalyst in my live that lead not only to my marriage, but to the birth of my two daughters.

I was moving from my first lecture of the morning to my first lab, second year of med school. A bunch of professors were in the hall, looking at the text message on their pagers. Then the second plane hit during the lab, it was clear that it was an attack, and I skipped the rest of the day, went home, and joined my (now ex-)fiancee on the couch watching CNN, and didn't turn off the TV until 5AM the next day.

I was in third grade, getting home from school, when my mother, somewhat distraught, tried to explain to me why I wouldn't be able to see my dad, who was in Atlanta, for a while longer.

I had gotten home from school and turned on the TV. And there was a tall building with smoke coming out.

The real tragedy is America's response to 9/11 which cost us numerous lives, put us into the largest national debt in our history, and destroyed our values, reputation, and identity. Our own irrationality did more harm than flying planes into two buildings ever could.

The problem with such "memorials" is that they seek to bring back the same feelings that caused us to make such disastrous decisions without reflecting on where we went wrong.

I was in my dorm I was up at about 730 off to my 8am class, when someone told me that the first tower had been hit. I told him he was ****ting me, so we went up and took our breakfast upstairs back to the dorm room. Got there in time to see the second tower hit. Spent the rest of the day with most of my floor watching the tv and following the news on campus. Everything was shut down that day.
