  • I'd like to publicly apologize to Ben Kenobi

A few weeks ago, after I became very frustrated with Ben in a discussion about religion, I commented in another thread about Ben's morality by mentioning something that he told me privately in a private message. I was frustrated with his beliefs so I attacked him as a person and betrayed a trust. I was wrong and I am sorry.

Ben is crazy and intolerant and he has abhorrent beliefs but it gave me no right to either betray his trust or attempt to denigrate him as a human being.

Ben should also be given some credit that he never gets around here. I think a while ago (coincidentally on his birthday), I had mentioned in a thread that we should give him some slack because he is, ultimately, a good man. Years ago, he tried to help me and offer me kind words. This is just a reminder that no matter how distasteful we find someone's beliefs they are more than just a particular stance on a particular issue; they are a person and they are deserving of our love and respect.

"I have nothing against Wilson, but he's nowhere near the same calibre of QB as Flutie. Flutie threw for 5k+ yards in the CFL." -Ben Kenobi

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Well he tried really hard to come up with those nice words about you!

            A) You just moved up several notches as far as my respect for you goes.
Don't betray a confidence. I think you know that now.
            B) Ben is entitled to whatever beliefs that he has. I don't agree with him on a few things, but I know enough to know that just because I have a different opinion, it doesn't make me correct.

What did he tell you via PM that you blurted out?

I would tell you all the things he's PMed me, but this is a Family Site™.

I generally feel unqualified to judge a "man". I do not find BK to be a "good poster" however. This is unrelated to his core religious or political beliefs as it has more to do with his incredible lack of honesty in debate. The most recent evidence of this was in threads about hockey and cycling/commuting. Even when obviously and provably wrong, he can never admit it. So he may or may not be a "good man" but as a poster he is a "tool".

That said, one should never reveal a PM confidence. It would have been wrong to do so and its good you feel remorse

BTW, did you edit the offending post? That would probably be a good plan if you haven't.

Oh so now he's a hero for apologizing? I think we're all forgetting the breach that led to this apology. A few swings on the noose and then we'll think about forgiving him.
