You should order him a McGill tie. Though I hear they're on backorder now for months due to Babcock...

When I started my last real job I asked the HR person what business casual meant and she refused to give a straight answer. Her implication was something like "anything that is modest and doesn't make you look like a slob," but that wasn't strictly enforced. I wore khakis and cheap polo shirts, and was generally among the best-dressed of the under-40 technical crowd. I still wear a couple of the shirts sometimes. They make me look grown-up.

I know what you're talking about and **** YOU. (Too soon to rehash that gaping wound)

I have one polo shirt. Polos and khakis are acceptable business casual in my firm, but you might feel a little out of place. I always wear dress trousers and a button-down collared shirt to look acceptably sharp. Sometimes a sports coat as well.
I very rarely wear polos casually.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891
Well, in any event, a dress shirt. Wide collared (ainsley). No buttons on the collar.

I wear them. What about it? Are you trying to start a problem?

Button-up would be what you think it is... button down is the shirts with buttons on the collar. Funny how words are like that.
And that does look a lot like Terrell Owens!

Asher, looks like more people do wear them casually, but they all seem to be over 40

The wiki article contradicts you, but whatevah.

How? I'm looking at it right now... there's a picture of a Van Heusen shirt with a buttoned collar described as "Dress shirt with button-down collar"
A button-up is called that because you button up the shirt... so all button-down dress shirts are button-up's but not all button-ups are button-down.

"Button-down" is sometimes used incorrectly to describe the front buttoning of a shirt; a "button-down" shirt refers to a shirt with an American "button-down" collar introduced by Brooks Brothers in 1896, discussed below.
It doesn't say it but button-up refers to the front buttoning.

It's not just "over 40", in the world. It may be that way here in the geek world called Apolyton.

Sloww, I know that. I was shocked when Asher made the original claim that nobody wears polos except for douches... because every man I know (ie- 25 and under) wears polo shirts. This was all to prove him wrong (and show that either he's lying or the people he sees in Toronto are weirdos) But I obviously know that.
