They pay for roads if they own a car and use gas. Same as everyone else.

I already pay a 'carbon tax' on the gas I buy. The cyclists can use that money to fund their trails. Deal?
i refer you to my previous post

You mean cyclists pay taxes too? I was sure they were just a bunch of free loading hippies

    • Ben said he didn't own a car for 10 years. That would make him the free loading hippie. Now that he's paid 2 bucks in tax he thinks he can dictate what everybody elses tax money is spent on.

Where did I ever demand that anyone subsidise my use of public transit?

Look up, I argued that public transit should be 100 percent paid for by the ridership.

I never used bike routes during those 10 years.

        • They probably don't want to pay for your roads anymore than you want to pay for trails.
They use the roads they pay for the roads. They use the trails, they should pay for the trails.

I use the bus, I should pay for the bus. User pays. Ain't a hard a concept.

          • If you are only paying for the things you use, then do you pay a pound when you decide to go down the park with your bird for a picnic? Where/who would you pay? no Ben, public services just dont work like that.

              • Squirrel Tax

Arizona will spend $1.25 million to help save 250 red squirrels that live near the top of a mountain. The money will be used to build rope bridges over the lone road through the squirrels' habitat and for monitoring the endangered squirrels.

                  • I bought my bike for 500 knr. It is a single speed, and came with lights, reflector, and lock.

I have spent more than I paid for it so far on 2 new tires (I get flats, don't know how to change them, and rode on it at least once), spokes repaired, and a new light (I had one break). Also I got a new lock, the old lock didn't do well in winter. This is in less than a year.

A good deal, and if I get it stolen it costs less than 100$ to replace.

Sure do. It's about a buck an hour.

I don't know how they work there, but that's how they work up here. Times are tough. The tax base has shrunk about 1/8th in terms of population and about 1/4 when you look at the recession.

The money just isn't there for park trails.

                      • It's called walking. You might have heard of it.
Why cycle when you can walk? Now that's what I call a ****ing brilliant retort.

Why use cars? Cars use highways, which costs TAXPAYER MONEY. It's called Conestoga wagons or horse & buggy, you might have heard of it. Don't require all these expensive TAXPAYER MONEY highways. Use horse & buggy instead of cars you arrogant morons!

That being said, I love having a car. Busses are terrible. They are one of the least efficient ways to get people from point a to point b.
Yeah, how INEFFICIENT it is to carry 80 people in a single traffic-jam-free car. It's much more EFFICIENT to have those 80 people each drive a separate car and have them all stay stuck in a traffic jam which causes them to pollute & spent time twice as much than with a normal car route. That way, there is 2 times as much time spent and 2*80 = 160 times more pollution spat to the city. How EFFICIENT

Near us they've built a lot of bike paths along railroad right of ways so they don't have to compete with Cars. They try to hook up all the different paths into a decent network.
This is how a traffic network ideally should be arranged. Walkers/bicycle-riders have their own narrow paths, separate from car routes.

So you're in Uppsala now? Cool. Be sure to buy an U-lock, oil it (and the bike while we're at it) sometimes so you don't get problems with rust. Always try to lock both the rear tire and bicycle body to a heavy, still object (like a lamppost or something). Never lock the front tire, it's too easy to release from rest of the bike.

The best insurance policy with bicycles is to buy a bike cheap enough so pro thieves (guys who drive in nights with vans and fill them with stolen mountain bikes) don't bother stealing it. Casual thieves are more motivated by low-quality locks.

The question isn't if it is a large amount of money, it is if it is an efficient use of federal monies to pay for what is essentially a local matter. I don't think it is. If a city wants to establish a system of bike paths, let the city pay for it.

Here we have dedicated bike rackes-- AU-lock can get through the frame of the bike and the rear tire. Many folks also employ a bike cable to loop around the front tire-- Its easier to cut but a thief probably would not bother if all they get is the tire
