  • There are a lot of opinions that don't make sense. I take it that you would also ascribe all of those opinions to me?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

That would be, politically, a very bad idea.

            • If BP shares crash much more, who knows a takeover or merger could be on the cards - as both a political and greed solution. Tantamount to the same thing.

                • Never mind, problem solved.

(CNN) -- While cleanup crews and technical teams continue efforts to stop crude gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana lawmakers are proposing a different approach: prayer.

State senators designated Sunday as a day for citizens to ask for God's help dealing with the oil disaster.

"Thus far efforts made by mortals to try to solve the crisis have been to no avail," state Sen. Robert Adley said in a statement released after last week's unanimous vote for the day of prayer. "It is clearly time for a miracle for us."

The resolution names Sunday as a statewide day of prayer in Louisiana and calls on people of all religions throughout the Gulf Coast "to pray for an end to this environmental emergency, sparing us all from the destruction of both culture and livelihood."

Criticizing him for taking a day off after CONGRESS HAS MADE HIM TESTIFY for four days is so hypocritical I don't even know where to start. If he's so necessary to the cleanup then why in ****'s name did they take him away from his job to testify?

Furthermore I don't see why anything should preclude the guy from taking a day off. Everyone needs days off. Christ.

I agree - I could not understand what the outrage was about.

The perception is entirely artificial. If the politicians had said "give the guy a break, he's under a lot of pressure" there would be no uproar.

                          • The politicians aren't making the perception here. The BP CEO is doing a helluva job at it on his own.

People sometimes work more than 60 days straight. It doesn't kill them. I have done so at times. Politicians do it routinely. Even if politicians were creating the perception, "give the guy a break, he's under lots of pressure" would be a laughable response.

                            • He spent one day with his family. Why are you so opposed to this? What about this is inappropriate? The fact that some people are stupid enough to think this is unethical? Why are you (and the media) fanning the flames of something that you've already admitted is ONLY a problem because of stupid people perceiving it as one?
