I've had no optical drives in my home PC for the last 5 years at least. Maybe even longer. I hate optical media.
I will play a pirated copy of the next civ for convenience (I don't want to insert CDs or connect to services or whatever) If steam isn't a nuisance I might play the steam bought version.
I will buy the game though because I want to support the people who make this kind of games.Quendelie axan!

I hope that at least you made backup copies of what you have downloaded, Sir Og. If treated properly, a DVD is ways more durable than a hard-disk, IMHO. I am right in the middle between old-fashioned customers who prefer a material support for what they buy and future-oriented buyers who prefer to have less encumbrance on their shelves. I still have doubts about which method is the most functional, though.
Edit: is not much of a support you are giving to "the people who make this kind of games", if you take into your consideration so candidly the possibility to play a pirated version of the game...The destination doesn't matter. What's important is the journey.

Bedammed if some internet soandso is going to get my bank info.
Gimme an old fashioned CD/DVD that I can buy in a store and I'll pay money. Otherwise............
I'll keep playing Civ 4. There are still FFH II civs I haven't tried out yet.
You don't have to give Firaxis your bank info.
You can buy Civ5 at the store, install steam (not putting any bank info on), disable steam, and play Civ5 with no one knowing.

MikeH, I am not saying that you should turn the downloaded game into a playable disk, but since you have the freedom to put your files on any support you like (of course, just to the purpose of a backup), the license shouldn't prevent you from doing that. Then only thing that the license requires is that you do not give to third parties such copy. The EULA usually allows the owner to install the same game on other PCs as well, provided those PCs are privately used by the destinatary of the license, and that could not be performed without letting the end-user to transfer the product into another support (unless you possess a external hard-disk).
I've heard that few games are instantly installed at the moment of the download, others are solely connected to the MACaddress of the machine you are using to acquire the software, but those, I hope, are extreme cases. It would be crazy, IMHO.The destination doesn't matter. What's important is the journey.

Steam could sell pre-paid cards, like you can get for PSN or Nintendo store for luddites/kids with no credit cards. I guess they don't feel the market is large enough to cover the extra expenses.Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth

Truth is out there! No one can hide it forever... oh, never mind. Too much x-files watching and too few news reading. Of course, you were not wrong... you were simply differently-rightful.The destination doesn't matter. What's important is the journey.
