It is not a surprise that Amerindians did not live in some Barney the Dinosaur like Nirvana.
Why would it be a surprise?

Well the US may have been slow compared to European countries and New World states but it did a pretty ok job compared to non-Western states.

      From wiki:

      # 1952 Qatar abolishes slavery
      # 1959 Slavery in Tibet is abolished by China after the Dalai Lama flees.
      # 1962 Saudi Arabia abolishes slavery
      # 1962 Yemen abolishes slavery
      # 1963 United Arab Emirates abolishes slavery
      # 1969 Peru abolishes the encomiendas regime through a land reform Land reform#Latin America ending de facto slavery in the country.
      # 1970 Oman abolishes slavery
      # 1981 Mauritania abolishes slavery

The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

Yeah compared to Oman, UAE, Yemen, Qatar... really great job, America.

All of Europe ended slavery long before we did.

We beat the Ottoman Empire... whop-de-do.
Some of this trafficking used areas under Ottoman rule. Britain and the Ottoman Empire, after the former pressed the latter on this matter, signed a treaty in 1880 for the abolition of slavery and the slave trade. However, the treaty was only enforced as Ottoman law in 1889.
And the nature of slavery in the Middle East was different than the Americas as well. That should be considered.

I still don't get why the Spanish are condemned for destroying Aztec culture. That's basically the one undeniably good thing they did, disposing of all that sociopathic butchery. Sure, they replaced it with greedy butchery of their own, but stopping people from devoting their lives to ripping each others' hearts out isn't what I'd call a crime.

I've read alternative history fiction where the Aztecs come to be a global power. Talk about distopia, they where a civlization who belived it was their divine duty to sacrifice people daily so the world dosen't stop combining that with modern technology makes a grim picture.

The nature of slavery in America was much different than Europe as well. Much easier to abolish it when it isn't closely tied to your economy.

Well, at least they didn't think contraception is evil and every couple should have ten children until the world has hundreds of billions of people. Now that's a dystopic future.

Agreed, reproduction is way worse than butchering millions of people.

I have to say that all of the apologist crap schools teach about the Indians pisses me off a bit. I can say with certainty that I have never personally given an Indian a smallpox blanket. Furthermore, I refuse to feel guilty about something somebody else did. Politically correct people can piss off.
