Speer, we may be so famous for slavery because nobody else (to my knowledge) lost their **** over it like we did, which, to be honest, speaks well for the U.S. Sure, it puts us behind the Brits, but ahead of pretty much everybody else.

Solomwi:
1804 Haiti declares independence and abolishes slavery
1811 Spain abolishes slavery at home and in all colonies except Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Santo Domingo
1821 Gran Colombia (Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama) declares free the sons and daughters born to slave mothers, sets up program for compensated emancipation
1823 Chile abolishes slavery
1829 Mexico officially abolishes slavery
1831 Bolivia abolishes slavery
1842 Uruguay abolishes slavery
1851 New Granada (Colombia) abolishes slavery
1853 Argentina abolishes slavery when promulgating the 1853 Constitution
1854 Peru abolishes slavery
1854 Venezuela abolishes slavery
Sorry, but we were WAAAAAY late on this human rights issue. Virtually every Latin American country had us beat by decades even. At least we freed the slaves before Brazil did, I guess.
Interesting that while we were passing the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, and Venezuela were all emancipating their slaves."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Wasn't thinking about timing as much as the conflict between slavery and founding principles, which is reflected in the Constitution (was also thinking more along the Asia/Africa lines). Still, good info and I stand corrected. Besides, that was top of the head speculation. I'm not wedded to it by any stretch.

Yes, Asher, that's why the Underground Railroad would go to Canada...
1803 Lower Canada abolishes slavery
but it wasn't official and throughout Canada until,
1834 The British Slavery Abolition Act 1833 comes into force, abolishing slavery throughout most of the British Empire.
But apparently, there were only 1400 black slaves in all Canada, but more American Indian slaves. Not surprising. Perhaps more importantly, it gave a way for escaped slaves to be more secure by making it to Canada, especially after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 which made it so that escaped slaves in the North could be apprehended and sent back South.
First country to abolish slavery in human history, however...
Yes, Iran:

Solomwi:
the funny thing is that the Latin American countries didn't go retarded like America and even have that founding ideas vs. slavery problem. To them, it was pretty obvious... throw off the yoke of Spanish rule, become democratic republics, and duh, got to free the slaves too.
I could be wrong because I don't know much about Latin American history, but it doesn't seem like there was all that much opposition to this, especially not compared to the American Confederacy."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

There's probably a term paper or two in how different mother countries led to different roads to emancipation in the New World ex-colonies. Not trying to exonerate the U.S. (and this would be by far the wrong way to go about it if I were), but I wonder how the Indians fit into the Latin American emancipations.Solomwi is very wise. - Imran Siddiqui

There were a great deal more American Indian slaves than Black slaves.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Yes, Mr.Fun, that's what I said in a previous post... The US only beat Brazil to the punch with regards to freeing the slaves (well, apparently Cuba too), but every other country in the Americas had freed the slaves years if not decades before the US.
notyoueither:
What?
Historian Marcel Trudel has documented 4,092 recorded slaves throughout Canadian history, of which 2,692 were Aboriginal peoples, owned by the French, and 1,400 blacks owned by the British, together owned by approximately 1,400 masters.[14] Trudel also noted 31 marriages took place between French colonists and Aboriginal slaves
Canadian First Nations owned or traded in slaves. Shawnee, Potawatomi, and other western tribes imported slaves from Ohio and Kentucky and sold them to Canadian settlers. Thayendenaga (chief Joseph Brant) used blacks he had captured during the American Revolution to build Brant House at Burlington Beach and a second home near Brantford. In all, Brant owned about forty black slaves"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

What was not clear from your earlier post is the numbers cited were totals found in history, not at the time of emancipation.
