That's not how it was taught in Alberta, which is far more conservative than BC.

    Seems you are lying.

So it isn't a problem that slave trade is reduced to be a part of "Atlantic triangular trade" ?
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Just to clarify - yeah, ancestors may have been involved in slavery, but that doesn't mean that I or other has any kind of responsibilty in it.

It would only be a problem if it wasn't made clear that slaves were one leg of the triangle trade.

In the Philly public school system in the 1990's and early 2000's, the terms were used interchangeably.

Middle Passage was another commonly used term.

I always heard it referred to as the "triangle trade," sugar->rum->slaves->sugar...or was it the other way around? Been a while. Anyway, provided they aren't claiming it was a trade in those little triangles we played in elementary school music class, it sounds fine to me.

                Elok:

It was actually very smart in it's execution. You give Africans textiles, rum, and manufactured goods (including guns which were used to capture more slaves) in exchange for slaves, who are used on sugar cane, cotton, and tobacco plantations, the products of which are then sent to Europe to be converted into textiles, rum, and manufactured goods to trade to the Africans who use the guns to get more slaves, ad infinitum.

Can Gribbler please retract this now:
Slavery is evil, while triangles are not, so saying "triangular trade" instead of "slave trade" is in fact a euphemism.

                  thanks

slave trade is a subset of the triangular trade. Dunno why this is a discussion.

If anything, just calling it 'slave trade' is disingenuous because it's only mentioning one aspect (albeit the most historically important) aspect of the trade. More knowledge is better right? Better to have kids know more about it than less?

Frankly I don't see what about calling it the triangular trade makes it difficult to understand that slaves were being traded. It doesn't have to be called the slave trade for it to be clear that this involved slaves being traded and that slavery is bad.

I'd just like to point out:

                          Canada
                          USA

Why is the USA always so far behind Canada?

Nah. The slave trade itself is way more relevant to the present than the specifics regarding how it was profitable.
