    Sloww:

But the state's rights issue was only coming into play on slavery. It was the political philosophy behind the ability to continue to keep slaves. What other immediate and tangible issue (not something high falutin and ivory tower intellectual like state's rights) was at cause in which state's rights were the issue? Slavery was the issue behind state's rights.

But we're talking about teaching children here! They have to be taught the truth!

I told you the truth and just like in the analogy, you didn't believe it. Fine.
If you want to believe that 95% of a people had no slaves, but fought primarily over slave ownership, feel free. Knock your lights out, dude.

it's like the Nazis. 95% of Wehrmacht soldiers didn't really want to conquer Europe or believe in the Master Race stuff... does that mean that the Nazis didn't fight for that reason?

Texas only rebelled against Mexico because the Mexicans outlawed slavery (and wanted the Texans to convert to Catholicism but that's a side issue). Texas would've been part of Mexico if not for slave-owners wanting to keep their slaves.

I suppose you disagree with that historical fact, as well.

Santa Anna dissolved the congress and replaced the 1824 constitution with a centralized military dictatorship. There were many rebellions in response to this. Texas was only special because it was lucky enough to win, and it had many white immigrants who had recently arrived from the United States.

Unrest and displeasure with the Mexican government started during Bustamante's presidency.

The Mexican-born settlers in Tejas were soon vastly outnumbered by people born in the United States. To address this situation, President Anastasio Bustamante implemented several measures on April 6, 1830. Chief among these was a prohibition against further immigration to Tejas from the United States, although American citizens would be allowed to settle in other parts of Mexico. Furthermore, the property tax law, intended to exempt immigrants from paying taxes for ten years, was rescinded, and tariffs were increased on goods shipped from the United States. Bustamante also ordered all Tejas settlers to comply with the federal prohibition against slavery or face military intervention.[6] These measures did not have the intended effect. Settlers simply circumvented or ignored the laws. By 1834, it was estimated that over 30,000 Anglos (short for anglophones, people whose first language is English) lived in Coahuila y Tejas,[7] compared to only 7,800 Mexican-born citizens.[8] By 1836, there were approximately 5,000 slaves in Tejas

There were plenty of other secession movements in Mexico that had nothing to do with slavery, so I don't understand how you can be so confident that "Texas would've been part of Mexico if not for slave-owners wanting to keep their slaves."

                    • I might've been exaggerating a bit, gribbler.

But you're right. there were other reasons for the rebellion in addition to slavery. It was always presented to me in school as the Texans wanted to keep their slaves and stay Protestant.

More reason why we need to be careful about what we put in textbooks and tell children the whole truth... ie- the Civil War was about slavery, not some high falutin thing like state's rights, an abstract notion that takes away from the plight of Black slaves and the importance of the North's victory.

Saying that only five to ten percent of people owned slaves kinda whitewashes the fact that more than three million human beings were enslaved in the South, and thus made up a substantial population of oppressed people.

It also masks the fact that slavery was the foundation of the Southern economy, and part of the reason for the Northern merchants' prosperity.

You did not have to be a slave owner to believe you had a stake in slavery and to preserve the racial status quo and white privilege.

Straight from one of your links:

Louisiana free blacks gave their reason for fighting in a letter written to New Orleans' Daily Delta: "The free colored population love their home, their property, their own slaves and recognize no other country than Louisiana, and are ready to shed their blood for her defense."
A black slave owner I would expect would want to maintain his slaves.
