Dunno why they attribute it to Canada.

It occurred 700 nautical miles from the Canadian coast, and it was a Liberian-registered tanker with American owners.

Don't forget, the Americans were responsible for the Exxon Valdez also. I think it's patently clear you can't be trusted with oil.
I looked up Exxon Valdez oil spill earlier today. The article said that there is STILL some oil left on the coast.

Okay, so I'm not that far from the Gulf Cost and I'm looking into volunteering for the summer for potential clean up efforts. I found an article with BP contact information for people interested in volunteering but nothing has really came of it.

Just wondering if anyone here has heard of any organizations already working on shoreline clean up or if its currently to dangerous for untrained people. I've seen reports that the fumes are a major hazard.

          Volunteer? Are you kidding?

I'd have thought BP would have half the south on standby by now.

For the summer? It may be Fall before it's capped, and cleanup could carry you into your retirement.

After weathering for a few days / weeks, the really volatile parts of the oil will have gone. The residue will have benzene and other nasties, but if you have suitable gloves (nitrile) and, in the extreme, vapor masks, you'd be fine.

My girlfriend's little brother (who is 24) just got hired by Aerotek to do shore clean up in the gulf. You have to have a 40 hour hazmat certificate and be willing to work up to 12 hours per day but they are paying $14 per hour plus $100 a day per diem which isn't bad for manual labor in the current recession. They also pay over time for anything over 40 hours per week and double time for anything over 60.

                      That's what I'm talking about.

Why volunteer when there's money to be made?

Fishermen in the dry Tortugas (by the Florida Keys) are reporting catching tar balls in their nets fouling the nets, covering shrimp & fish in their nets, and getting tar on their boats. It looks like southern Florida will be getting some oil.

No matter WHAT the Obama administration would do with this crisis, the opposition would spin it however they want, so they can still criticize the administration.

Obama administration takes on more aggressive, direct role in cleanup: "Oh nos! The Obama administration has no business interfering with private business. We want a SMALLER government!"

Obama administration takes on an oversight role, rather than more direct role: "The Obama administration is sitting on its ass. In fact, I bet this oil spill was deliberately caused by Obama as part of an Islamic terrorist act!"
