What we need are super-absorbent seals that we can toss in there to clean up the mess.

And then bash their heads in the release the oil into barrels?

When a plane crashes it doesn't cost billions of dollars.

(In the one case that it did, we did stop flying airplanes for a while.)

Why are you faulting the US?

BP = British Petroleum. Those islanders are responsible for this mess. I bet the platform was staffed by Welshman.

Btw, is there a rule how far national borders are reaching into the ground? I mean there has to be a limit, otherwise someone could claim his national territory would extend to land on the opposite side of the Earth!?

Now here's the idea: if national borders don't go that deep we could dig a tunnel from say Finland to the ME and acquire oil from underground reservoirs there. Certainly as long as we dig deep enough it's perfectly legal!

Yes but we didn't suggest never flying planes again.

My biggest beef with oil companies is that they never accept the blame or take it, they always pass it on to the consumer... always. In other industries if a company F's up then that company takes a hit to the pocket book, not in oil. If the cause a disaster or blow-up a poorly maintained refinery they just go "oh well I guess gas needs to go up $0.05/gal to pay for that mistake". Too much colluding in that industry.

If memory serves right, the boundaries of a countries space are defined as a conal shape, with it's apex in the center of the planet. this also extends into the atmoshpere (but not into outer space, of course)

                              Serious post.

Okay, so I'm not that far from the Gulf Cost and I'm looking into volunteering for the summer for potential clean up efforts. I found an article with BP contact information for people interested in volunteering but nothing has really came of it.

Just wondering if anyone here has heard of any organizations already working on shoreline clean up or if its currently to dangerous for untrained people. I've seen reports that the fumes are a major hazard.
