I've always liked that argument because it makes sense from a purely numbers point of view and it would work well until some real world event like a war comes into play. When a major war happens then the industrial strength of a nation most surely becomes key to achieve national objectives in ways that all the corn in Iowa can't. Now, if we're going to assume peace will forever be in our future without any more major power wars then 100% free trade is the best option but if we feel there just might be a major power war sometime in the future then having a national industrial policy becomes a necessary evil for the national good.
