  • Nyborg: Men smarter than women

The paper can be found here: http://eugenik.dk/static/bilag009.pdf

Helmut Nyborg took a peek at many other studies and tried to determine whether gender differences in IQ exist. He thinks that women do slightly better in verbal tests, men better on spatial, and in sum, men have an IQ advantage over women of between 3 and 8 points, his best number being around 7 points.

Men also have a wider dispersion of IQs than women. (This I've actually come across cited quite oftenly)

My own confusion came from the fact I had no idea of how one could possibly find if an IQ difference existed between men and women considering, if I recall correctly mean IQ was defined as being the same in both sexes intially and the tests where designed to refelct this (I'm trying to figure out where that factoid came from, so far no luck). Otherwise I've just started reading it and checking out his citations.

PS I just realized my posts are so 19th century. That totally made my day

You have to teach me how to read as fast as you do.

        3.2.1. Method
An exceptionally careful sample selection began in the late 1970s with a computer search in the Danish Folkeregister for every twentieth child that was either 8, 10, 12, 14 or 16 years old (±0.5 year), was either a boy or a girl, and was attending an elementary school in the Skanderborg communal district, situated either at the countryside, in a suburb, or in a larger city. Information about the socio-economic status of the parents, defined by father's occupational status, was also collected and categorized at five levels. If the twentieth child, or its parents, refused to participate in the 20+ years cohort-sequential study, the twenty-first (or in two cases the twenty-third) child on the computer list was invited. No particular pattern of reasons for refusing to participate
could be spotted in retrospect. Five age group categories, 8, 10, 12, 14, or 16+ year, were established on the basis of this preliminary search protocol. The age group distributions of sex, geographical characteristics, and socio-economic background of the children were inspected when about 50% of the children were tested, and the age categories were then supplemented to full capacity, so that each age category finally included a total of 15 boys and 15 girls. Great care was taken to ensure that all categories ended up being representative with respect to the general Danish socio-economic population distribution while also conforming to the nationwide proportional representation of rural, suburban or city residency and school attendance. The total cohort-
sequential study included two cross-sectional phases—1976 (including only some cognitive testing) and 1988–2000+ (full study), and a longitudinal study spanning 1976–2000+, which included two repeatedly tested groups of 30 boys and girls, each, and a control group of 30 boys
and girls that were tested at age 10 and 16+ years, only. The first part of the present analysis is based on the sub-sample of 31 males (mean age 17.4, SD = 1.8) and 31 females (mean age 17.3, SD = 1.9) for whom WAIS and all the other test data were available. Later analyses include children
        as well (Section 5).

Yesterday scientists revealed that beer contains small traces of female hormones. To prove their theory, the scientists fed 100 men 12 pints of beer and observed that 100% of them farted a lot. No further testing is planned. It's funny because it's true

No method can account for social programming, access to resources and inherent bias. Why is it a surprise to anyone that, in a world still owned and run by a majority, minorities score lower on intelligence tests?

I mean come on, people are willing to believe that 911 was an inside job, the moon landing was fake or alien evidence exists... yet, they think IQ tests are totally honest and manage to control for all bias across socio-economic cultures. What world do you people live in?

IIRC women make up about 52% of the population

This is a thread about women. Also this is a guy from Scandinavia, today those guys are mandated to pee sitting also Sweden or some such country has just dropped gender quotas because they actually prevented women getting in (as opposed to their original purpose).

True the data is from the 1970s. But even then Scandinavian countries where relativley low on the scale of "culturally programing" gender roles.

Edit: After rereading your post. Please explain how something like Raven's Progressive Matrices can be that heavily biased? Yes there may be a crime of omisson, other types of "inteligences" (if you don't belive in g) but this dosen't change the all too good correlations of IQ test to loads of important things in our modern world.

You may now retort that off course our socioeconomic positions are affected by the same biases... but you forgot a ton of other correlations! Things like doing calculus, reading and arguably even things like designing airplanes or the succes rate of brain surgeons. We value such things because they are what makes our civilization go. Now that is discrimination we need.

You might have a point about Sweden. I think it is mostly because the women are 8s (on nation comparative average) and the men are 4-5s. It's a stange situation that was confirmed by our panel of 40 people (half female) from 23 countries.

                      loin, women count as minorities.

I'm glad that I'm a whilte male first-worlder when it comes to IQ tests. We might throw the asians a bone now and then (I mean, we did nuke them), but it will be a cold day in hell when someone starts outscoring us on anything. As long as we define points, y'all can kiss it.

Is there a denifiton of minority I'm not aware of? You reek of victiomological thinking.

There's really no point in arguing that women are minorities. He could make his point just fine without that. So why is he doing it?
