Gribbler's right here. Unemployment is an incentive not to work, and discourages employment by forcing people to pay into it when they are working.

We'd be better off if working people didn't have to pay into unemployment, and kept their money. Jobs would be easier to find, because it would cost less to hire an employee.

The qualification for SS retirement checks is reaching a certain age, the qualification for unemployment is being unemployed?

How would giving unemployment to people who have jobs work? Are you suggesting that once someone loses their job, they start getting checks for a certain amount of time, even if they get another job before then? I'm guessing people would take advantage of that by quitting their jobs every time the checks stop coming in so they can get back on unemployment, then getting a new job.

And what I am saying is that the qualifiaction for SS being age is stupid. Do you agree or disagree?

Disagree... since they don't have to stop working to get the checks they are more likely to keep working. While they work they pay social security taxes, making them less of a burden on the system. Everyone wins.

But if people can get unemployment while working, they are encouraged to find ways to maximize the burden they put on the system.

SS is insurance against living longer than you can work.

SS is "retirement savings" that aren't really savings. If you're going to argue that a 401(k) is insurance against ever wanting to retire, sure.

If it isn't savings, and it isn't. Then why do you call it that?

Because the government does. It's supposed to be a retirement plan.

The government keeps a fund. That's what all insurance companies do. It won't work otherwise. That doesn't mean it's a savings account. You really can't be this stupid.

But it's obviously not. It's a payment for merely being old, in the case where it pays to the elderly.

I believe the intent of the law was to help those who couldn't help themselves, and age was seen as one of the many dehibilitating issues that SS attempts to address. In this day, however, age is not as dehibilitating as one may be led to believe. In some cases age only brings a greater advantage and a greater pay to individuals qualifying for SS.

I didn't say it WAS a retirement plan Japher. That is what it is marketed as.

I agree wholeheartedly. My grandfather gets SS when he has more money than he knows what to do with.

We pay into unemployment, but may never use it (hopefully)

We pay into taxes for roads that we may never drive on

Why then should we feel entitled for SS that was meant to help the elderly, blind, and disabled?
