    “We Pretend We Are Christians”
    By STEPHEN J. DUBNER

The Freakonomics e-mail inbox constantly produces interesting material. Like this one, from a reader we’ll call G.D.:

I loved your books! I have found my thoughts drifting to some of the subjects over the past few days, especially altruism and apathy. I was curious if any of the experiments took into account the subjects’ religious beliefs. I don’t know how one would logistically test that but it would be interesting to see how those claiming to follow a religious doctrine teaching altruism would do in the tests.

This thought led to another about myself. How would I do in the tests? We are agnostics living deep in the heart of Texas and our family fakes Christianity for social reasons. It’s not so much for the sake of my husband or myself but for our young children. We found by experience that if we were truthful about not being regular church attenders, the play dates suddenly ended. Thus started the faking of the religious funk.

It seemed silly but it’s all very serious business down here. We don’t go to church or teach or children one belief is “right” over another. We expose them to every kind of belief and trust that they will one day settle in to their very own spirituality. However, for the sake of friends and neighbors, we pretend we are Christians. We try not to lie but rather not to disclose unnecessary information. As the children are getting older, this isn’t so easy for them and an outing is probably eminent.

We are not the only ones. We have found a few other fakers out there. I would love it if you ever explored this subject in a future book. I should mention that the friend who recommended Freakonomics to me is the head of the bible study at her church. Interesting.

How bad is it where you live? Have you ever had to resort to such actions?

Faking belief is a time-honored social tradition.

I get significant writing work from religious publishers. It's just assumed that, since I'm doing the work, I must be religious. I've never lied about it but I must confess, to do my job efficiently, I don't correct them when they assume that I'm one of them (unquestioning belief being something they're good at).

I live in Oklahoma. Here you are expected to be Christian (or at least to have some religious affiliation). Athiests are considered evil. Before I became a christian I remember how people used to look at me when I told them that I didn't have a religious affiliation. I sometimes felt as if there were horns atop my head.

That said, I never claimed to be a Christian when I wasn't. I think that's evil.

I stopped claiming I was a Christian when I realized that people at my "Community Christian" church/sunday school took that stuff literally, ~10 years old.

I was like "wow, they are NOT just speaking metaphorically, they're out of their minds". That was soon followed by "what was that crap about" asked to my parents, followed by "you don't have to go". Then we all pretty much stopped bothering. I, as the first born, kinda vetoed it.

I've never encountered it or felt the need to pretend to be anything. Granted, that's probably because I've always lived in very cosmopolitan areas where people just expect others to come from various backgrounds.

Is that really any different then non-practicing catholics.
I was raised as catholic and went to church and blah blah blah, but now, I only go to church for weddings an funerals. I don't participate in any fund raisers or any other church activities so for all practical purposes I'm not really a catholic anymore. But If asked, I would claim to be one.

Just the opposite here. I've had people stop talking to me because I was a Christian. What's the point of doing your deeds before men, and going through everything that we do, only in the end to have it all blow away?

It's hard enough doing it when you believe in it. I can't imagine trying to put out a false face up.

They probably really stopped talking to you for totally different reasons that are obvious to most of us here.

I'm pretty sure it is alot easier when you enter the deal knowing it is full of crap. Say the right talking-points, quote a verse or two, cut your hair properly and magically everyone loves you; it's a con-man's paradise.

You might not be able to imagine putting a false face up, but organized religion is begging for it and that is evidenced.

I grew up in CT. I've never experienced much pressure to believe. One exception: my best friend from grade school, particularly if he's been drinking. Deep down I think he is worried about my soul or somesuch. I take it as a sign he cares, but occasionally have to tell him to cut it out.

Anyway, CT is obviously not TX.
