Serb, I'm not saying KB:Legend was a bad game, I think it's better than the original Kings Bounty, and I think it's superior to HOMM IV (which was crap) and HOMM V, which was somewhat better than IV.

    I'd rank em:

    HOMM II
    HOMM III
HOMM I, (if only for the Jester on Insane difficulty!)
    KB: The Legend
    KB:
    HOMM V
    HOMM IV

How can you compare apples and oranges? How can you compare a RPG with tactical combat with a TB multiplayer-oriented strategy?
With the same success you can compare Dragon Age with the World of Warcraft.

The games really aren't that different from one another.

Oh, great. The games have the same combat, but they are two completely different concepts (and KB was the original concept, btw).
In first game you travel across the lands to solve the main quest (via solving the side quests) - you don't capture castles to build more units, you don't mine resources, you don't make any strategic plans to crush your rivals by destroying their sources of income, etc, - you just kick their asses on the tactical level of planning (in combat).
In second game you make strategic decisions first, then implement them on the tactical level (in combat), you capture more mines to get more resources to capture more castles, where you can build various buildings/upgrades to get more/better units or get even more resources for that, etc.
In first game the gameplay is about exploring and fighting, in second it is about making proper STRATEGIC desicions in WAR.
The first game is about adventuring and fighting. The second is about a strategy in war.
So, hell yeah, they aren't that different from one to another.

You capture better buildings for kickass units in Kings Bounty. It's one of the more important features.

And I think I'm aware that King's Bounty was first, I mean you dig for the ultimate artifact!

Not in the original King's Bounty (you could capture castles there, but control over castles was never a significant part of gamplay, those captured castles were mostly a by-side product of "killing the villians" quests and just a storing place for your additional units. You couldn't construct any buildings/research spells or increase resources output there, simply because the only resources in both new and old KB are gold and leadership). In new KB you don't capture castles at all. You visit them to buy units and artifacts (time after time you do siege castles, BUT still there is no single castle in new KB that belongs to you You siege castles only when it's a part of the quest, you just can't attack any castle you encounter). Aside HoMM, you don't build-up your own Empire in KB, goddamnit! You just travel in a fantasy world and kick asses.

That artifact was just one of the two main quests sorta like in Fallout-2 (to find the GECK and to destroy the Enclave - to win the game you should accomplish both). In the original KB you had to find the artifact and kill all villians. Damn that game was 16 years ago.

I think we can all agree HOMM2 was the best. The Russian version, HOMM5 was the worst (synonymous with 'Russian' these days anyway).

The online version should be even worse.

Why Canucks are so annoying and dumb?

Heroes of Gaia is not a Russian game.

You have never heard about kongregate.com?

HoMM3 (with expansions) was the greatest. HoMM2 was very good. HoMM4 was ****. All others are unknown to me.

King's Bounty was a late-1980s prequel to Heroes of Might and Magic 1, so it can be considered as a "part 0" of the series.

Serb: Asher is trolling you. He does it for fun.

King's Bounty is a very old game. It doesn't have proper mouse control, and it's resolution is too low to support a map where you quickly know where you're going at. HoMM1 had similar issues on a lower scale, and by HoMM2 these issues were resolved, so it's the classic of the series. HoMM3 had improved (more realistic) graphics, but some think they took away part of the fantasy atmosphere.

Either way, by HoMM4 and certainly by now the basic concepts of the series are too simple and boring. It needs new ideas of some sort, perhaps more RPG elements, perhaps something else.

...why is this in Off-Topic rather than Other Games?

Two new games of King's Bounty series already have that. Especially the last game King's Bounty: the Armored Princess.

In the original KB the player just needed to get the artifact, not to capture all villans.

I've played the new King's Bounty games, and they're good, but not compelling. If I happen to be bored and start playing, I generally have a good time. But I don't find myself sitting around at work thinking about the game. A compelling game gets into your head so that everything is viewed in the prism. Play too much Tetris and you'll start seeing falling blocks everywhere you go. KB just doesn't do that.

Side note: Why doesn't the spell check recognize Tetris by default?
                                John Brown did nothing wrong.
