The old testament serves a similar purpose as the new. It records the relationship between man and God (mostly/entirely from man's perspective).
As such, it is still valuable. And actually valuable in much the same way as the new testament.

The Old Testament is not entirely relevant anymore for Christians. So why do Christian right-wing fundies rely on chapters such as Leviticus so much?
And let's talk about another religion, Judaism. The Old Testament is still very much relevant for them. Do ultra-conservative or orthodox Jews advocate a return to following the laws in Leviticus? Such as putting adulterers and adulteresses to death? Gay people to death? Do ultra-conservative Jews in today's world avoid wearing clothing of mixed material? Facing questions over whether he used taxpayer funds to pay for trips to Argentina to see the woman with whom he admitted having an extramarital affair, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said Thursday that he would repay the state for a 2008 business trip to Buenos Aires.
The dates of that taxpayer-funded trip matched dates on steamy e-mails released Wednesday between the governor and the woman, named Maria, with whom he had an affair. It appears that the two were sexually intimate during the visit.
Sanford said at a press conference Wednesday that it was around that time his friendship with the woman "sparked into something more" than a friendship.
"While the purpose of this trip was an entirely professional and appropriate business development trip, I made a mistake while I was there in meeting with the woman who I was unfaithful to my wife with," Sanford said in a statement released this afternoon. "That has raised some very legitimate concerns and questions, and as such I am going to reimburse the state for the full cost of the Argentina leg of this trip."
