Therefore they sequester themselves, causing an imbalance between the salary of physicists in academia and outside of academia, which is a symptom of the oversupply of academic physicists and the undersupply of physicists (or people who have physicist-type abilities) outside the academy.

How much of this is due to being burnt out on what you've been doing and how much is the allure of beau-coup dollars for using your abilities in new and different ways. Also how much do you think finance, econ, etc can really be modeled in similar ways to hard sciences? In my mind it seems that a lot of this quant exploration is a desire to explain away the animal spirits because it'd be unacceptable to admit that sometimes it is just animal spirits and they can at times, be harnessed by anyone.

Claiming that something can't be modeled is just ignorant. A model is either useful or not; there's no need to claim that it reveals some sort of deep truth.

Sure, if you can measure it you can model it but it seems that what is being done is just a remake of The Taming of the Shrew; take an idea of how a something is and shove it into something else starring Heath Ledger. It's curve fitting taken to a higher level.
