What liability does the paper face and what is likely to happen to the columnist?

Probably no legal liability, as there's no libel. However the Mail is losing advertisers as a result, and that could get the writer fired.

What did the silly b*tch think he died of? A massive overdose of gay?

There's a lot of parallels here with that story posted last week about the Canadian columnist giving off on someone who recently died, and all the lurid insinuations they could make. I'm not one for putting the dead on a plinth (Although that does sound like a fascinating experiment in "art") but not outright slandering them or pointing and sneering at their fates? Bit much to ask?

he has been hailed as a champion of gay rights
he received an overwhelmingly positive response from fans. In fact, it only made them love him more.
What's the issue here? All of a sudden when he dies young, it's no longer proper to report that the fact was he was gay and open about it? Please. This coming from the man who delights in publishing lurid tales about kings and queens throughout history. What, now you back off because it's too 'controversial'?

That's true. We don't know why he died, but we do know that he was gay and open about it. That's the difference between the two stories. If the other fellow had admitted to being a kiddy fiddler, or had been convicted of being one, by all means bring that up in the obituary. Had he chosen to deny the allegations that he was gay, then it would be wrong to accuse him of being gay in his obit. As it was, he chose to come out and reap the consequences and benefits.

What consequences? Dying of an undiagnosed heart condition that had nothing to do with his sexuality?

I didn't really read the 1st article thoroughly, but it appears as though the author is claiming as though:

                        1) Having your partner (in an open relationship?) have sex in the next room, and
                        2) Smoking weed

can somehow lead to pulmonary edema.

Some English dude. Apparently it's sort of a big deal that he was gay, which doesn't make any sense to me. Aren't all Englishmen gay?
