  • Rush and the Rams

    LINK

During his brief stint as a commentator on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown pre-game show back in 2003, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh was forced to resign after making this controversial comment about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

“I think what we’ve had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn’t deserve. The defense carried this team,” Limbaugh said at the time.

In his resignation letter Limbaugh said “my comments this past Sunday were directed at the media and were not racially motivated. I offered an opinion. This opinion has caused discomfort to the crew, which I regret.”

In a league where almost three quarters of its players are African-Americans, including the head of the players’ union, Limbaugh’s attempt to become co-owner of the beleaguered St. Louis Rams, in his home state, has been met with swift opposition.

According to ESPN, DeMaurice Smith, the Executive Director of the NFL Players Association, has written an email to the association’s executive committee, detailing his opposition to Limbaugh’s bid. “I’ve spoken to the Commissioner (Roger Goodell) and I understand that this ownership consideration is in the early stages. But sport in America is at its best when it unifies, gives all of us reason to cheer, and when it transcends. Our sport does exactly that when it overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred.”

Commissioner Roger Goodell has already cast doubt on Limbaugh’s viability as an NFL owner, saying that “divisive comments are not what the NFL is all about.” Goodell said that Rams representatives told owners at a recent meeting that they haven’t fully committed to selling the team, which is being shopped by Goldman Sachs Group Inc.
For fear of rah's wrath I will comment:

Rush apologized for saying what half of America (black and white) was thinking, and probably still are thinking about McNabb. Society was pinning the pseudo-success of the Eagles on McNabb and exemplifying his skin color as something honorary or monumental. The Eagles win and LOSE as a team, despite the color of their leader, who still is IMO over-rated... or maybe it's the team that is.

The NFL allowed Fergie, of the Black Eyed Peas, to buy into the Dolphins stating that they are "trying to reach out to new groups of fans and paint the Dolphins as a glitzy team". WTF?

If we take into account peoples past mistakes or persona or their status or their skin color as part of a decision to sell something to that person I claim that is extremely prejudice. Thus, denying Rush and allowing Fergie is prejudism by the NFL. Liberal reporters defend the NFL saying that Rush isn't going to get the chance to trade "Negros", they defend the NFL who trades Negros! What the hell is this world coming to?!

McNabb is actually good in spite of his team.
Miami Dolphins are glitzy or have you totally not watched their antics?
Rush should be kept as far away from sports as possible. It's possibly one of the few things he knows less about than government and rights, and he doesn't know a whole lot about those either.

The NFL is an incredibly conservative (in terms of controversy) business overall. Especially since Tagliabue and continuing with Goodell. It makes sense they wouldn't want to invite the controversy of Limbaugh owning a team.

This is just rich guys arguing about who to let into the club. The NFLPA (aka, the inventory) let it be known that they don't want a jerk like Limbaugh pulling their strings. They don't technically have the legal power to stop it, so they raised the Bad PR flag.

The Checketts group immediately threw Rush under the bus and said they would move on without him; the NFL has taken no actual action.

And I don't know what you're on about with Fergie. There are a bunch of music types buying small bits of the Dolphins. What does that have to do with anything?

BTW, Fergie was the voice of Sally in two of the last Peanuts TV specials.

No. He doesn't seem too surprised or bothered by it, which is quite commendable given the way he's been unfairly smeared over the past few days.

Then again, he did have Keith Olbermann's support to bolster him.

And I don't know what you're on about with Fergie.
It's clearly case of sexism. Bush was denied ownership because he's a man! Clearly.

Money is money. I don't see why Rush Limbaugh shouldn't be able to invest in an NFL team if that's his heart's desire.

From what I can see, Rush never made an issue of him buying a stake of the Rams. Never brought it up until other people leaked it and started getting in a huff about it.

As for 'incredibly conservative', they let Vick back. If Vick is good enough to play in the NFL and he killed dogs, I don't see why the ownership has a problem with letting Rush buy the Rams. If it is because he's conservative and they don't want conservative's money, well there's quite a few conservatives who actually like NFL football. I suspect Goodell will be hearing from them. If Rush's money isn't good enough for the NFL, then I guess most conservative fans will find the NFL the same way.

Lose, lose for the NFL IMO. The only winner here is Rush.

Yes, I'm sure it's the fact that he's a conservative and has nothing to do with the fact that he's a professional **** disturber.

This is the EXACT same harebrained logic and wording you had about Balsillie and the NHL. It didn't make any sense there, either.

Well I'm sorry, I believe in market economics. Balsillie had the best offer for the Coyotes, and now the league has to accept an inferior offer, the team will still move, and they are out a year of expenses for team operations. If Rush is part of the best offer for the Rams, I don't see why the league should bar him.

Market economics: teams don't attend games owned by douchebags.
