  • What was the best decade for music?

Define "decade" as any ten-year period you want. Doesn't have to the be the '70s, '00s, etc.

For me, it's 1964-1974. It's crazy how much musical innovation and how many great bands came out of that period and pretty depressing how little of either have come out of all the years since...

Offhand I'd say 1815-1825 'cause Beethoven kicks ass.

Probably the 1530s. Sure, there are some arty hipster fags who will say the period from 1543-1553 is better, but they're just pretentious douchebags. Not to mention that Hans Neusidler's Ein newgeordent künstlich Lautenbuch is the difinitive book of lute music.

That's crazy. The lute players of the 1530s were just pretentious technicians who lacked the authenticity and soul of their influences from the 1510s. Andrea Solari...

'64-'74 does cover the bulk of classic rock.

I more or less agree with '64-'74. Best pop music ever during this time period - the British invasion and Motown.

Rap, the greatest post-1974 musical innovation.

British invasion, folk rock, Motown, and acid rock. More recent eras have not been better. Note: for jazz and the blues, see the 1930s; for marches, American-style, see the 1890s. But the best era was 63-73 (Some good Motown before the Brits hit.)

That's why I ended it at 92. Personally, I liked rap until The Chronic, which everyone loved... 'cept me it seems.

the chronic was the high point (now that i think of it, pun intended) of hip-hop. the genre's popularization opened up the floodgates for less talented acts to be treated like cattle.
