Some of Obama's aides probably think Hawking has made "an especially meritorious contribution to ... cultural or other significant public or private endeavors."

Jesus ****ing Christ, who cares? It's a goddamn medal.

Er...how about going from being a single mom on welfare to being the richest woman in Britain? Or does accomplishing something with ope's life count for nothing?

If she was a citizen of the US, that would make sense.
But then I have no clue what the official nebulous qualifications are for a presidential medal of freedom. I mean come on. If Obama has already given out 16 in the short time he's been in office, how exclusive is this reward.

            From Wikipedia:

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded by the President of the United States "for especially meritorious contribution to (1) the security or national interests of the United States, or (2) world peace, or (3) cultural or other significant public or private endeavors"; it is awarded to individuals selected by the President or recommended to him by the Distinguished Civilian Service Awards Board.[1] President Barack Obama has awarded 16 Medals as of August 12, 2009[2]; President George W. Bush awarded 81 Medals; and President Bill Clinton awarded 88 Medals.

1 and 2 makes sense. 3 is kind of silly and seemingly a catch all.

I could see it being handed out for a work of literature, such as To Kill a Mockingbird but --even though I'm a Potter fan -- the Harry Potter series is simply pulp fiction for kiddies.

Its biggest claim to fame is that it got kids reading again. Maybe that's what the award is for.

When can we expect an award for Tolkein and CS Lewis? If you are giving it out to British authors who are popular, surely you can't leave them out.

I have figured out what's really going on.

J.K. Rowlings will come to the White House to get her award. Malia and Sasha will get to meet her. Obama is doing this for them.

A great way for the admin to start another row with the Brits. Unless Obama can drink it warm and flat.
