The retardation of industrial development in the South is pretty irrelevant, since the major source of domestic capital for the U.S. was Southern cotton sold abroad. Southerns sold cotton and put the money in banks. Banks loaned the money to Northern industrialists. Whole country benefits.

I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of empirical data supporting that, which the abundance of civil-war-era historians probably have compiled by now. To me it doesn't seem significantly less likely that southern slaveowners devoted nearly all of those proceeds to 1) expanding their own estates, 2) bequests, 3) southern banks whose investments were primarily local, or 4) some combination thereof.

I've heard people call for "positive discrimination" for African-Europeans in Eastern European countries.

What is the rational there? I mean my own people never had any colonies, never played imperialist games, never owned slaves (ok we owned some Christian slaves for a short while in the 6th century). Slovenians where considered inferior by the Italians, Hungarians and Germans, and we where economically disatvantaged for well over a millenium. Our nation was slated for genocide during WW2 and tens of thousands died in Italian and German camps. During the Communist our nation payed a whole lot of taxes to the Yugoslav state which at that time was really into the nonaligned movement and was not into economic imperialism.




So... What do *we* owe to migrants from the third world just because they happen to be of a different race?

I was under the impression positive discrimination was intended to help against actual discrimination (not discrimination against people who are long gone). Ergo, it is intended to correct actual behaviour which puts people at a disadvantage today; for that to happen you need to have at least laws making discrimination illegal, whether for reasons of race, gender or ethnicity. Failing such laws, even positive discrimination will have a very limited effect - but it's a start at least. People first need to realize that any discrimination is bad - and people who do not agree need to realize that discrimination is not supported by law. Laws to 'protect' youngsters from the evils of homosexuality (a biological given), violence against Roma and the treatment of minorities in Eastern European countries in general would suggest that positive discrimination is certainly not superfluous.

It doesn't matter that they arrived after the Civil War. Jim Crow lasted until the 1960s and discrimination continues even today. White immigrants to America could assimilate much more easily. This allowed them access to same benefits as decedents of "native" whites. It's not that specific white people benefited from racism, but white people as a group. So, once you were included in the group of white people, you benefited from the oppression of others.

Of course, Slavs weren't instantly embraced as white (nor were Mediterraneans nor the Irish), but eventually they were assimilated to the dominant culture.

I don't see economic advantages for polish factory workers in Illinois from discrimination of blacks in Alabama. And it's still collective responsability and collective advantage: i guess according to you it's fair that a son of an immigrant from Mozambique will get more points in exams than son of immigrant from Slovenia, because one is black, and one is white. Very fair.

It also didn't help matters that the imams who were responsible for the ****storm supplemented the Mohammed depictions with fake ones, e.g. a guy dressed up as a pig with a caption "this is the prophet Mohammed" added by the imams, plus the fact that Mohammed has been depicted in some Islamic art traditions for centuries. If the depictions were intended to demonstrate that Islamic fundamentalism is retarded then it did so quite effectively.

I'm with Felch on this one. And the cheering and celebrations after 9/11 really made me feel sympathetic towards them

My religion had been the butt of so many jokes, (some were actually pretty funny) but not once did I jump up and say that the person should be killed.

The official and unofficial racism against Asians lasted long enough for us to intern the Japanese in camps. Your brothers certainly didn't help public opinion of the Chinese after 1949.

And IIRC Chinese immigrants have done better than every other group except the Jews.

It's pretty funny that in the other thread, you say that forced labor for little pay is "literally slavery", but don't recognize 19th century Chinese immigrants as being slaves...
