If they're going to have an elephant sculpture, make it an elephant and not an elephant-headed man that happens to look just like Ganesh.
Just to be clear, you are also absolutely livid that they have a Christmas lights exhibit each year?

Wake me when they have a baby Jesus. Christmas lights are hardly religious.

Am I the only one who's greatly offended by the hideousness of that wretched thing? If people want to see tacky crap at the zoo, that's what birds of paradise are for. The religious uproar, now, that's just boring.

CHRISTmas lights are hardly religious, but a statue of an elephant with hands outside an elephant exhibit (and missing a number of arms to make it an accurate religious idol) is?

That's nice DD, but the whole debate is over whether it is religious or not.

You're as bad a spammer as loinburger.

Ganesh is prolly a dickgirl as well. You might also note that I was responding to Asher whining about colored lights in response to someone *****ing about the Ganesh statue. I had no real opinion on the contraversy over the disco elephant.

FWIW, most Christmas light displays are fugly too. I say we concentrate on the aesthetic violation here, because the religious aspect is simply boring. But if you want it on topic: yes, that statue does look a good deal like a Hindu idol, however inaccurate. But in the grand scheme of things, it's quite insignificant. Except it's incredibly ****ing ugly, so smash it. With sledgehammers. Or train an actual elephant to stomp it into powder.

If you think any celebration or decoration that coincides with Christmastide should be banned, that's your argument not mine.

I don't, I think it's a public area and completely inoffensive so it should be permitted. It's called the common sense approach.

I find it funny that a lot of the posters here who supported putting the ten commandments in public courts are up in arms over an elephant with hands outside a zoo exhibit. It's even missing two arms to actually be an idol of Ganesh.

Christians can be such hypocritical whiners. You guys lose all perspective of reality and fairness. It's okay for bishops to accost people outside the biggest transit terminus in the city and hand out recruiting literature, it's okay for Christians to send missionaries around the world to indoctrinate people who are desperate, it's okay for the people to stand on the streets downtown and PREACH THE GOSPEL to the public, but the second someone puts a statue of an elephant at the zoo, a line has been crossed?

If you would like to take the position that the far more egregious displays of religion in public spaces (as mentioned above) are bad, then I suppose you would either be lying, or be consistent. FWIW my PUBLIC school in Calgary did have a manger scene on its grounds 'round Christmas.
