I never said what I personally "think" happened here, because I'm willing to admit we don't have the necessary facts. I'm just proposing a scenario that is no less probable than your own groundless speculation based on the assumption that these two adults 1) must be utterly devoid of financial resources and time over a summer break and 2) must be too ****ing retarded to observe and circumvent the fickle news cycle that is familiar to any moderately educated consumer of pop culture. Of course I agree that those assumptions, if correct, would make it virtually certain that they're pathetically dependent on expert advice from the vast right-wing conspiracy, but I simply don't accept either assumption in the first place and can propose a plausible alternative to each: 1) rich pr*cks who 2) have flipped on the news more than once in their lifetimes.

Don't be silly. There are no shortage of rich kids who, having every financial factor in their favor, settle for stroking their inflated egos by other means such as notoriety in pop culture and/or power trips in government service. The Kennedys, Rockefellers, etc. had more than enough old money floating around and yet they didn't just sit around the pool from cradle to grave. Come on.
