McDonnell's misfortune is that he was studying to be a minister. Preachers are expected to express opinions on family life and such. Lawyers talk about the law.
Actually, IIUC McDonnell was studying to become a lawyer at the time. He already had one master's and was writing the thesis for another. I don't think it was too priestly either...supposedly it contained a fifteen-point plan describing how the Republican Party could take back the field. Awfully wonkish for an abstract theological discussion, no?
